Read More In contrast to one reviewer, who wondered if we'd all seen the same movie, I feel that differences of opinion about it only make it more intriguing. I thought the film was absolutely first rate from beginning to end. Director Todd Field probes life in an affluent suburb, especially among families with small children. Bland and safe, it is not. Controversial, it is, but each and every character is thoughtfully drawn. Having a narrator adds a quirky "docu-drama" touch. If you like Kate Winslet as much as I do, check out "Enigma" and "Holy Smoke," 2 more of her unusual films. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

A wonderful cast of actors who all pull off supurb performances. I would best characterize this film as a satire that is commenting on our society and it's fundamental flaws & morality in general. The movie is soothingly narrated off and on through-out the film (ala Desperate Housewives) while all the while you know the mess the characters in this story are making in their lives is about to come to a head. Winslet plays a woman emotionally detached from her husband and child, Connelly plays a working always on the go mom, Patrick Wilson a man who can't seem to grow up, Haley a pedophile who lives with his mother, and Edelman a cop-gone-bad of a bully. How all of their lifes inter-connect in the community is the story & the moral of the story addresses the morality of that town that we might take a second look at our own. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful I only got through the first half hour. As much as it seemed like a great film, it needed a different narrator. I agree with the other reviewer.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I had NO idea what I was getting myself into. The directing, acting, story, all that gets 5 stars... but the whole movie has left me with this erie, unsettling feeling... and I am just basically creeped out. It was very good. But it gives me the willies. The whole movie just has this ora of weirdness and a really icky vibe. I still feel all kinds of weird and it just ended liek 20 min ago! The only thing different from some '60s storyline is that the male protagonist is a stay-at-home dad who feels his masculinity has been taken from him.
I hate to think that some screenwriter's rule is true for all films. One of those rules is that a film is in trouble if you hear voice-over narration. It means the director couldn't figure out a way to SHOW this aspect to you, or the scriptwriter couldn't figure out how to let us HEAR it in dialog. But the rule is true for this film.
The only thing worthwhile? Some beautiful naked bodies. Otherwise, nada. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

But the main focus of this movie is sex - and it's disturbing side - sexual predators. If a movie that hangs on this one thing disturbs you, avoid it. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
