My husband, my five-year-old girl, and myself love the creativity in this movie. We really like all of the Shrek movies, but to compare this to Shrek is to compare apples to oranges. This movie has a lot of hidden messages including about wonder, spirituality, and Christianity........similar to Narnia in ways although it is shorter, simpler, and lighter than Narnia, again meant to be different movies. Read More As bad as this movie did in the theaters I was surprised by the fact that I enjoyed it. The cast of characters did well enough for us to connect to them and the musical score drew us into an almost believable world of magic and imagination. After only watching this movie for a few minutes... both of my grandchildren asked me to put in different movies that they've already seen 20 times vs. watching this one for the first time! Dustin Hoffman and I grew up together. In the beginning he made great films... these days he seems to be just making films.
the acting of all the adults was horrid. Only the young boy did an ok job.
If you have nothing better to do... then clean the lint out of your bellybutton rather than rent this movie.

I was amused to see Dustin Hoffman in this role, he can't act "fantasy". The other actors will learn, no excuse Dustin.

I'm surprised this has gotten good reviews, I was bored about halfway through and couldn't wait for it to end, and then the ending... well we saw that coming.
