This definately puts a major damper on enjoying the movie. However my main problem with Eragon was not that it did not follow the plot of the book (that is to be expected with most book to movie adaptations) but the plot itself. Character development was severely lacking, the story line had way too many gaps where certain events just seemed to happen (the Urgals appearing at the vardens stronghold for example) and majority of the characters seemed goofy if not comical. I believe that if a little more time was actually spent on the film it would have turned out fantastic, instead of rushing it into theaters. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More If you have read or plan to read Eragon and its sequels I would strongly suggest that you stay away from the film. I understand that a book has to be changed to work as a movie and easily accept needed changes but what was done here went well beyond that. I question whether the people who made this film ever saw more than a basic outline of the book before filming (commentary on the DVD backs this up). This is likely the worst adaptation of a book since Roger Zelazny's Damnation Alley in 1977. The characters and locations in the book were well developed and richly painted. The few characters that made the cut from the book to film (most of the best did not) were shadows of the originals. The transformation of the butcher from a hateful and treacherous man into a scared victim is a good example of how some were twisted and changed. The bottom line is this: If you want to see spectacular special effects and shallow characters without a good, well rounded story then see the movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? I dont think it is fair when people judge a movie from how well it follows a book, it is not supposed to be a book, books are for detail and developed story lines, in books you can get into the characters head, not in movies so much, movies is for action and excitement, and Eragon did not disappoint me in that way.
So if you dont expect a LOTR level movie and you do not expect a perfect book adaptation, this movie is a great adventure for small as well as big souls. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More had Star Wras not come first, this would be a good movie. As it stands, take the dragon riders and replace them with Jedi and you have the same exact plot from Star Wars Episode 4. It's so blatant it's almost ridiculous. Set it side by side with Ep 4 and it would be like listening to Pink Floyd while watching the Wizard of Oz. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? AARON J (AKA MY SON) REVIEW , HE READ THE BOOK
This movie was not that good. It barely followed the book. Cut out many key points. And skipped many scenes. It had good action and suspense, but it needs to follow the book more. I don't think they're going to make a second movie because of everything they cut out. I'm sure if Christopher Paolini (book writer) saw this he would be pretty mad. The bad guys are boring, except those assasin creatures. The main characters are hard to connect with, I'm not sure how I feel about Jeremy Irons Character, I sure didn't feel bad when he...oh now that would spoil the story for those that didn't see it yet. Any way, it lacked depth for me, though my wife did seem to enjoy the movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Christopher Paolinoi is a great writer and this was a very disspointing movie compared to his writeings. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
