The Wire: Season 04 (2006)
Member Rating:
David Simon's masterful social commentary went back to school, quite literally, in the fourth season, which focuses on Baltimore's crumbling education system. A relevant link to its first three seasons is supplied by Roland "Prez" Pryzbylewski (Jim True-Frost), who left the police department to become a teacher at Edward Tilghman Middle School, a hardscrabble institution on life support that services a low-income, drug-infested neighborhood. (Incidentally, Prez's career path is similar to one of the series' producers, Ed Burns). His eighth-grade math class includes a close-knit quartet of friends -- Randy Wagstaff (Maestro Harrell), Michael Lee (Tristan Wilds), Duquan "Dukie" Weems (Jermaine Crawford) and Namond Brice (Julito McCullum). The wisecracking Brice is ignominiously selected to be part of a university experiment studying at-risk kids, which counts a former police commander, Bunny Colvin (Robert Wisdom), as a consultant. Out on the corners, Marlo Stanfield (Jamie Hector) strengthens his grip on the city's West Side narcotics trade once dominated by the Barksdale gang, and with his cold-blooded lieutenants, Chris (Gbenga Akinnagbe) and Snoop (Felicia Pearson), devises an ingenious method to hide the collateral damage of his ascent from the law. This sleight-of-hand bedevils detectives Freamon (Clarke Peters), Greggs (Sonja Sohn) and Bunk (Wendell Pierce). The trio are flummoxed by the lack of victims that would surely coincide with Marlo's ever-widening domain, a savage power grab that also threatens the relative peace of the New Day Co-Op under East Side pooh-bah Proposition Joe (Robert F. Chew). Meanwhile, the Democratic primary in the city's mayoral campaign pits the entrenched African-American incumbent, Clarence Royce (Glynn Turman), against Councilman Tommy Carcetti (Aidan Gillen), a scrappy politico with a savvy campaign manager in Norman Wilson (Reg E. Cathey), but a long shot to become Charm City's first white chief executive in years. ~ Joe Friedrich, Rovi

The way this show masterfully blends the lives of criminals, cops, and politicians and shows that they all have many things in common is what has so completely drawn me in. This show is gritty and real, it doesn't make anything pretty or cute for the sake of drawing in an audience. Instead the show tries to be as true as possible at the risk of loosing an audience. The beauty is that the truth to its style, I feel, actually draws people in, as it is a refreshing twist on contrived cop shows that air on network television. I have watched every season of the wire on dvd and I am completely hooked. I almost signed up for HBO just to watch episodes as they aired until i found out that season 5 was the last season and it was nearly done airing.

I've always disliked police shows -- I hate CSI. I rented the Wire only because so many different people said it was awesome--I'll try anything that hyped once. After the first disc, I was hooked. While the backdrop is definitely cops, the focus is cops and perps as people, in all their faults, obsessions and shortcomings. Along the way, the show's writers touch on many of the biggest problems facing America's urban cores, and do so in a way that allow you to see them without feeling like anyone's preaching. More importantly, the show is engrossing story. Each season has 40 or so very 3D people living and dying in the streets of Baltimore, coming together (or against each other) in intricate and surprising ways. Final Conclusion: Rent it because you want a realistic and gritty view of "Real Police." Or because you want an education on the inner city and drugs. Or because you want to be wildly entertained. Regardless, you'll get all three.

Wire sets the benchmanrk for all the shows on television. The third and the fourth seasons are gold in my opinion, set things up nicely for season 5.

One the best cable series ever written, it's just too bad the DISKS cannot play due to so many SCRATCHES, I am probably going to cancel my membership because at least at a video store I can check for scratches.

Quite simply the best season of TV i've ever seen. The finale may be the most powerful episode of The Wire ever (and that's saying something), it stayed with me for weeks afterwords. Watch the first few episodes of Season 1 and you'll be hooked, no doubt.

This show isn't for you if you expect everything to be explained to you piece by piece. If you want a show that makes you think and then makes you smile after you figure what it's all about... The Wire is the show for you. It doesn't dissapoint if you want a quality show that is real and tells it how it is. This show has some of the best actors and the best "Thugs" on the market. This show is the best out there if you liked Menace to Society, Godfather, The Sopranos, Dead Presidents and Scarface with a little bit of the real word spread everywhere. Thank you Baltimore!!! Sincerly, Watches only the BEST!

In the realm of television series, "The Wire" (every season) eclipses all except for "Band of Brothers" for all-around excellence. Just the casting itself couldn't be better. Take any character and you've got a convincing portrayal. The acting out of Baltimore's underbelly of drugs and crime is second to none. This series defines 5 stars. It's easier just to say that as otherwise, I could just go on and on. See it from the very start and sit back and enjoy every moment. "You feelin me?!!"

As a huge fan of the past 3 seasons of The Wire, this season does not disappoint. This season is different than the others such that the core group is not working together anymore, but are all still characters in the show. There is something to be said about the writing of this show, it is quite amazing. The attention to detail is what brings the realism alive. If you are a first time viewer of the wire you can easily start with Season 4 and get right into it as well. I do not watch many shows bc I am so picky about them. I will say this series is amazing.

OMAR IS BACK !! What can I say, it's that time for me to get caught up in the wire again. I saw this season when it first aired, so I'll watch it again this week. It makes me want to save a child. However, I'd like to know where in the world Namond came from?? Who said WeeBay had a child that old?? You won't be disappointed, but I suggest you watch Seasons 1 - 3 so that you don't get lost.
