Read More This was an extremely faithful adaptation of Patrick Susskind's novel. I was concerned about how the final scene would be played out - it's a cinematic challenge. While I don't think it was quite successful, the filmmakers did their best with a shaky ending. Ben Wishaw was truly remarkable and was one of the reasons the film was a success. Although some of the scenes were so graphic I had to turn away....others were heartwrenchingly beautiful. I was much more sympathetic to the movie's Grenouille than the novel's. Both are excellent and well worth your time. John Hurt's narration alone is worth experiencing. Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman are nice extras, as is the luminous Rachel Hurd-Wood. Read More The literal-minded will complain about the ending, and indeed there is a certain fairy-tale quality to John Hurt's wonderful narration. I think it was a creative end to a truly original movie. It is long, but never boring. Dustin Hoffman seemed to be enjoying his character. The cinematography was excellent as well. As the movie progressed, things were coming together but the one thing that spoiled the movie for me was....well...without giving anything away...the last 30-45 mins of the movie when the perfumer is going to get his sentence. This part might honestly offend some people. It definitely shocked me. I would not recommend this movie to certain people because of that....I can't say anymore without spoiling the movie so i guess you must see for yourself! Hope you find this helpful!
