But oddly enough, found myself reexamining the ... Read More A bit slow? Yes. Odd? Certainly. Worth a watch? Definitely!! I was left with the "what the heck was that" sensation upon the close of this film. But oddly enough, found myself reexamining the plot and characters the next day and describing the flick to freinds and family over the next couple of weeks. A sign of a very worthwhile film. Great acting, amazing set pieces (especially the bridges of old Paris). I really enjoyed Dustin Hoffman's performance. It's a film that has a very odd task set before it: conveying an amazing scense of smell through a purely visual medium...but it pulls it off. A serial killer that we watch evolve from his moment of birth. A search for perfection from a most base, vile, and imperfect lead. Wrap your head around this one...I am. The movie kept me interested as it took some thought-provoking twists and turns. One turn at the end was extremely unexpected and perhaps a bit disappointing for me. Believe me, you will know it when you see it. If you tend to like more mass market/popular movies, this is probably not for you. Read More Outstanding flick - great story, original, beautifully shot, superb locations, thought-provoking, unusual, nuanced, excellent acting, it bears repeated watching. I saw it first on a flight to Germany and actually ended up watching it three times during that same flight. Each time I noticed or realized something else. It's incredible. True, it was beautifully shot, and the acting isn't bad, but the story is so unimaginably horrid and just as poorly executed my girfriend and I were SQUIRMING IN PAIN. Then to make it worse, I wanted to invite my friends over so they could watch just to laugh at how bad it was. No joke. STOP READING NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT THE SCENE RUINED, BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW IN ADVANCE... there's a crowd that breaks into a massive orgy. I cannot stomach that kind of stuff and it altered my entire view of the movie. I think the point the director was making could have been driven home without going to that extreme.
