This film is beautifully shot in the West. Very frequently, one sees characters walk into what appear to be portraits of the California and Texas landscapes.
In a nutshell, this movie is a Romance (in the traditional, not the current, definition of that term). In bits and pieces throughout the movie, we learn about the wonderful life Travis had with his young wife and son, but which gradually, and then tragically, fell apart. Travis, who is seen at the beginning of the movie, walking mute through the Texas desert, eventually reunites his family, with the help of his brother and sister-in-law, but, because of his own illness and its potentiality, must walk away from them.
This is a powerful movie. And yes, like all great works of art, it requires some investment in its watching. It is well worth it.
Written by Sam Shepard. Directed by Wim Wenders. Starring Harry Dean Stanton, Nastasja Kinsi and Dean Stockwell. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More as is typical with european directors, there is little to no 'action' as such, but this superb character driven romance is one the best of all time, just as a movie, the way wim wenders captures the vision of the american west is wonderful. if you like movies that transport you to a place you've never been, but perhaps visited in a dream, rent this one. no spoilers in this review. this movie is also great if you have loved and lost, but it does require some investment, so watch it on a rainy night, when there are no distractions. it is well worth it, also one of the few movies where if you watch again with the directors commentary, you learn a very interesting explanation of why the structure of the film turned out the way it did. a great introduction to this directors works. Read More I thought this movie was dream-like: scenes showed sparse and lonely details, stage-sets rather than typical movie production. Harry Dean Stanton was brilliant. It is slow going but I feel that the pace adds to the drama and reflects the desolate nature of the wide open spaces, mirroring the loneliness of the main characters. Read More The story was wonderfulI, I thought the insights from the kid were wise beyond his years. I really enjoyed the cinematography (the winding roads and beautiful hues), and the lazily played 12 string guitar in the background, added so much. The mood and tone of this film was perfect for my taste. I thought this movie was about the ability to try to understand what other people may be going through. I would suggest using this movie as a tool in interrogations but I think it would cross the line into cruel and inhuman punishment.
Other than that-two thumbs up. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
