You cheer for the hero. You cheer for the anti-hero. The viewer is sucked in with brutal dialog and archetypal values of honor--when it suits the moment, greed, imperialism, and survival. The people of Deadwood are human, and therefore flawed. Perhaps that is what draws viewers in so deeply. I absolutely love this series. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It took me awhile to settle in to the dialogue, but once I got past my initial shock, the language began to flow. This is not passive entertainment. This show requires your full attention in order to pick up all of the nuances and meanings in every scene. Now that we have finished watching seasons one and two, we need our "fix". When will season three be available through Blockbuster? Netflix has it! Please get it ASAP! I'm sure there are others impatiently waiting to see what happens after "the wedding". Read More I've sat down to watch episodes with friends and some can't believe it and others don't want to watch another minute. If you get past the immediate shock of the dialogue, stay tuned because there's more to come. This has been the best series HBO has put out in many many years. (And before I saw this I was a devote Sapranos fan) I've watched every episode of the entire 1st, 2nd and 3rd seasons about 4 times and still pick up on new things. The dialogue is fantastic, you'll even find yourself putting on the subtitles to keep up with it. The scenery and realism of the set is outstanding. The characters, and story lines are unmatched by any other film or series out there. I just wish HBO hadn't abruptly ended what was sure to be a continuing and historical transformation of the west at the turn of the century. This could have gone on for many years. So whay did HBO cancel it? I can only imagine that it was too shocking for the HBO Execs (those c0ck5uckers). Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More both series one and two are the best western series i have ever seen. it was realistic of the old west. it was not prettied up for the viewers. i regret that i have heard nothing of a third series. i hope they do continue it. If you get the first one you will find yourself going to get the next one as soon as you finish the first, and it continues that way throughout both episodes. Was a little taken by the language and it was explained during the bonus disc that the town was full of brazen criminals beating their chest. Now as you see I can't stop watching these great actors. I have a habit of putting down a book that I'm reading because I don't want to read the ending where the characters die off. Should I complete this series? I'm looking forward to the next season-3. Read More Deadwood is a series created by David Milch, known mostly for the edgy show "NYPD Blue", but Deadwood feels more like Milch completely unchained than anything he ever tried on NYPD Blue. There's a similar tone between the two, flawed heroes, not quite rotten to the core villains, and they are both wrapped in a political wrangling blanket. Where Deadwood really separates itself from Blue though is in its dialogue. The way this show is written is like watching Shakespeare through the dirty lens of Lenny Bruce. The dialogue seems to actually pop off the screen and is laced with more obscenities per minute than a George Carlin concert. There's a real elegance to the words at the same time that it sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. Top it off with some really great performances by Timothy Olyphant, Brad Dourif, Molly Parker and the excellent Ian McShane, and you get one of the most original and fresh television series in a long, long time (if you can handle the blue language).
