The Package (1989) Reviews

The Package (1989)
Member Rating:
The Package, a thriller involving political assassination and intrigue, is an excellent action feature using a familiar theme and providing good performances by the cast. Boyette (Tommy Lee Jones) is a prisoner entrusted to Gallagher (Gene Hackman) for transportation back to the United States. Boyette escapes and Gallagher must find him. In doing so, Gallagher finds himself getting into far more than he had bargained for as he becomes involved in a political assignation plot that he must stop. Both Hackman and Jones are excellent in reprising familiar roles. Hackman is never better than when portraying the decent man in a precarious position, and Jones plays Boyette with the same cunning and intelligence that he brought to The Executioner's Song. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

Well written action & intrigue film. Plot moves quickly - allows viewer to stay one or two steps ahead of Hackman (hero) instead of 5 or 6 miles - as in many action films. Adequate performances by Tommy Lee Jones and Dennis Franz.

Solid cold war film with solid actors--interesting storyline and good, but not gory, action scenes.

This film was a first class thriller! Anything with Gene Hackman would have to be A-one! Well scripted with very authentic sets make this one of the best of its kind I've seen in a long time. The kind of roboty role that John Heard plays is rather unusual for him but he was convincing. I'm afraid todays films ( 2008) don't have the authentic wallop they did back then. This one deserves 4 stars!

This film should not get an R rating. Very tame, 60's cold war drama. Not one of Hackmans best., but was just OK. I would not watch it again, it seemed a bit scattered. No character development. I would give it 2 1/2 stars at the most and I am a HUGE Hackman fan. Sorry Gene!
