The movie was well written and When Hoffman spoke and you closed your eyes you really thought Capote was speaking (amazing). I read the book and saw the movie "In Cold Blood" but never realized the hard work and turmoil Capote went through to write the book. I would highly recommend it. Read More This movie was well scripted, excellent acting, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was the best ever protraying Truman Capote..!!!! It was a very sad movie on his part but you have to remember what he went thru to get the real story behind why this family was killed... For those of us who remember, this story did happen and did ruin Truman Capote's career & I assume the rest of his life... He died a drunk in the 80's.... You deserved the Oscar Mr.Hoffman....Excellent acting....From the sound of your real voice I do not know how you became Truman Capote but you mastered every sound and movement the man made..... Read More Story moves slowly at times because it takes the time to paint the behind-the-scenes look at the psychological changes Capote went through to complete the novel, "In Cold Blood". This is what the movie is about, researching anf writing the book, not a biopic of Capote. The closest we come to learning something "in-depth" about Capote the man is through the shared chilhood experiences he and one of the killers discuss in their jailhouse interviews. These shared experiences draws him into a personal involvment with the story he's trying to write. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is dead-on as Capote. However, I'd give the nod for the Best Actor Academy Award to Straitharn (Good Night and Good Luck). The supporting casts adds little to the movie.

Hoffman, who previously was known to me as the guy who said, "I sharted" in Along Came Polly, blew me away with his performance. Watching him play this role is reason enough to see the movie.
I'll be quick to ackowledge that this movie won't be a crowd-pleaser. It is not one of these fast paced summer flicks that keep you grinning sheepishly until the credits roll. The movie does move slowly, but I felt like the characters were involving enough to keep the audience interested.
I give it 4 stars for outstanding performances by all of the actors and by director Bennett Miller. I recommend renting this film. I can't imagine wanting to watch it more than once except to entertain guests who haven't seen it.
Add this to your queue, but enjoy it with wine and crackers... not beer and wings.

Read More Without exception the performances in this film are outstanding. P.S. Hoffman held my interest throughout the film, even though the storyline seemed to become irrelevent (I just didn't see much depth in a plot that says "OK, I will talk to these here people, then I'll go write me a book). I would put "Capote" and "Good Night and Good Luck" in the same category: They are both films with good acting, both are tedious to watch, and both show that Hollywood has learned to make movies that few people will ever watch more than once.
There are so many movies that I watch over and over again (admittedly some of them are getting pretty old) but the type of movies that the studios are turning out lately bring to mind the old saying "I would rather take a beating than to have to go through that again".
The movie is worth a rental just for P.S. Hoffman's wonderful performance, but it is not worth a purchase. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||
