Brick (2005) Reviews

Brick (2005)
Member Rating:
A tough-talking teen attempts to uncover his ex-girlfriend's killer in director Rian Johnson's hard-boiled high-school noir, told in the style of a Dashiell Hammett mystery. An outsider by nature, Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is forced to penetrate the elaborate ranks of the high-school social scene and its more insidious underbelly when the body of his former girlfriend Emily is found lying lifeless in a remote creek. Though the pair had been on the outs, Brendan can't seem to shake the hysterical phone call that he received from Emily the day before her body was discovered, a call in which she rattled off a number of cryptic words: "brick," "pin," "tug," "poor Frisco." He's determined to find the guilty party, and to do that he'll need to uncover the meaning behind her enigmatic phone call. From the highest-ranking athlete to the lowest-level burnout, no one is above suspicion of leaving her in that creek or putting her in the position to end up there. Brendan's skill for getting the right attention from the right people leads him to a local drug dealer of urban-legendary status (Lukas Haas), who walks with a cane and lives with his mother. As Brendan infiltrates the social and political web more deeply, his theory solidifies and each player's role becomes clear, from the shifty-eyed pot slinger to an upper-crust innocent who may well be a femme fatale. Brendan may soon be ready to make his case, even if it's too late for him to get out. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

If you are into movies with a 1940's detective narrative mixed over a modern day high school setting... this one is for you.

The dialogue seems a bit out of place for high school kids, but otherwise this is a great movie. Intense and exciting.

It's a fun, involving concept, but it tends to weaken the more you think about it. Good concept, but didnt climax the way that it should've.

This movie was fantastic. If you've ever liked the noir atmosphere or genre, this is the best example in modern film.

I like clever dialogue sometimes it can get in the way of following the story.

I loved the film noir feel mixed with the angsty teen drama... it worked. It added unexpected quirky humor to a classic style without turning it into a comedy. Sometimes I forgot that I was watching teenagers in high school and felt like I was watching a great noir mystery and just about then, something unmistakably teenage would happen to remind me... clever, interesting movie.

Review 420: high times of senior year go noir with the genre's detective/criminal characters as adolescent stereotypes & an investigation of the criminal underworld tracing drug traffic thru different social groups, all portrayed by actors with a keen sense of the film style along with use of the era's poetic dialogue & slang.

This site NEEDS to have negative stars for some films. I now, along with the second Crow movie, A Very Brady Sequel and Ichi The Killer have a 4th movie to add to my list of "The most unwatchably bad movies I have ever seen" list. I'm sure many of you have heard of internet users wishing for a button that would allow you to stab somebody in the face? This movie made me wish for something similar on my remote. The dialogue is asinine: imagine some really bad 50's film noir with horrifyingly bad hipster speak and you've got this movie - I defy anybody out there to find me 1 teenager who actually speaks like this. The plot is nothing that you haven't seen done before & done much better & the characters are uniformly loathsome. 17 minutes into the film I realized that if a "Kill the character onscreen now" button existed on my remote there would have been no characters left in the film. Seriously: this film gives a whole new meaning to the word "stupid".

our copy was broken, just so all other viewers know, no judgment on the movie's quality, just that we never made it that far as it was broken
