I gave it an extra half of a star because I liked how it looked at the girl from both sides of the coin (medical vs spiritual). Read More Platefuls of hooey served with a shovel, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE if nothing else, shows how moviemaking skills & audience taste have declined since "The Exorcist" hit theatres. Friedkin's film was frightening & encompassed, however strong/lacking might have been the faith of the viewer, some thought & feeling about religion. "Emily Rose," on the other hand, is neither scary nor religious; it just flails about, trying to create shivers (& a saint) out of its secondhand story, dialog, atmosphere & special effects. Wonderful actors like Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson & Campbell Scott trudge on, doing their best against the mediocrity. Scott, who plays the sort-of villain here (unless you include the unseen Satan) is reduced to near sneering & twirling his mustache. As the prosecuting attorney, he does offer the best line: On what grounds, the judge asks, is Scott objecting to the defense's line of questioning? Read More This film really wasnt that bad that it couldn't have been a made for TV feature on WB or SciFi Channel. I can remember when they played the real tapes of Anna Exorcism on the TV news, I only wished they could have used those tapes and played that back in the film! That was literally frightnening and I would think that the tapes will eventually surface on the NET. At least we hope.
As for scary there is one great scene that I give big props, the one big scary scene involves the cover art of the DVD case. That scene alone is worth the time to queue it up. Other than that, I don't think there were other scenes that had impacted me more than that one. I waited to see a possessed girls face appear from the clouds (it would have made this film legendary).
I dont think its going to stand in the same aisle as The Exorcist as an all-time classic, because it will not be oscar worthy. And it didnt grip 10 million people to the panic and psychosis The Exorcist did.
