A very good movie, indeed. It turned out much better than the very beginning scenes. An offbeat, very Australian, showing an intriguing culture. Very psychological, as an intriguing, but very dominating mother, tries to control the lives of her very different teen age sons. It is quite unconventional, and at times, hilariously funny in way that only Brenda Blethyn can portray.

Barely promoted and strangely absent from video store shelves, "Introducing the Dwights" is one of those sleepers that surprises with its resonance. Blethyn is marvelous as always, illustrating a frustrated comedianne and single mother with unexpected contradictions. What could easily have been a shrill, one-note performance is layered--one moment she's self-loathing and vain, the next compassionate, envious, pitiful, engaging, and tragic. The relationship between her sons and Jill, the girlfriend, are natural and effective as well.

Perhaps it's because this movie arrived right after I'd savored "A Dance to the Music of Time," a marvelous cinematic saga. Or because I have seen Brenda Blethyn in far better movies--including her recent cameo in "Atonement." In any case, I disliked "Introducing the Dwights" quite thoroughly and could hardly identify with the family at all. It was a come-down in my recent movie viewing. So, I'm hoping to see Ms. Blethyn again soon in a role that's worthy of her talents.
