This is perhaps the best of the movies depicting Beethoven's life and music. It conveys the profound emotion of his music and, to a lesser extent, the evolution of his later work. It moves the viewer. Ed Harris gives what may be one of the best performances of his noteworthy career. The extraordinary makeup on Harris makes you see him as the maestro and not the actor. Viewer, be prepared to be swept up in music, the emotion and the acting. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This movie was well acted and I thoroughly enjoyed the music, however, did not like all the fiction. I don't think we needed to change so much of history that we had Beethoven actually hearing at the time he wrote the 9th. He also did not conduct the 9th as he was completely deaf. We should revel in the fact that he could write such a symphony without being able to hear. However, I do love Ed Harris in the movie -- he looked exactly like Beethoven. I didn't even recognize him at first! I enjoyed it but you should be reminded that this is FICTION. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Tried to take a slice of life and make a movie out of it -- but it was lacking in so many directions. Beethoven's deafness never seemed to be carried across the board as sometimes the copyist would have to yell into his ear horn, other times she just had to face him when she spoke, and yet other times she spoke very softly and he was able to hear her. I was falling asleep near the end. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The performance was officially directed by Michael Umlauf, the theatre's Kapellmeister, Beethoven shared the stage with him. However, two years earlier, Umlauf had watched as the composer's attempt to conduct a dress rehearsal of his opera Fidelio ended in disaster. So this time, he instructed the singers and musicians to ignore the totally deaf Beethoven. At the beginning of every part, Beethoven, who sat by the stage, gave the tempos. He was turning the pages of his score and was beating time for an orchestra he could not hear.
However, it was beautifully directed, and I enjoy watching it regardless.
Altho I recommended watching 'Immortal Beloved', it's far more accurate. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Aside from the stale & unconvincing acting, this film has very little historic value. The character of Anna Holz was completely contrived and never existed in reality. An insult to the memory of such an ingenious composer as Ludwig van Beethoven and a waste of good film. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

This fictionalized account of his life was just, well, sad. They wanted to make him intense and a little crazy, with the sensitivity of a bull in a china shop. Didn't we see that in the movie "Amadeus"? And why was the camera moving all the time? Seems to me the director wanted to show how artsy she could be, but all the moving just made me dizzy. Loved the music, didn't like the story. I don't recommend this movie, Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
