While the Anna Holtz character is fictional, it's a beautiful one. I enjoyed watching this movie over and over. Bravo.

I seen this at the Toronto International Film Festival and it was the only film that got a standing ovation. That must say how it moved people. Ed Haris is a over the top performance while Diane Kruger plays the meek student to do his bidding with copying music. How he compares her life's work to a "fart in the wind" is hysterical! looking forward to any extras the DVD may have. I really don't like much classical but there is a real story behind Beethoven's creative style all while being deaf that is enough to intrigue any music lover or creator. To create music by feel and imagination from nature is something I found myself doing at times, so it was uplifting I found that in common with good ole Ludwig van....

Beautiful film - it brought tears to my eyes and at some points even took my breath away with it's beauty. Ed Harris is just amazing. My only complaints would be some of the characters could have either been eliminated or they should have been more developed - but over-all - just beautiful. I'm not all that of a fan of classical music - but this brought it into a new light for me. The music is the star of the show here and a character of a real entity along with Harris & Diane Kruger who plays the woman who "copies" for him.

This could have been a great movie, if it were based, at least vaguely, on historical facts and a time-appropriate, much more intelligent script. I found the dialogues between characters to be banal and too "hip" for an 18th century setting. No doubt, Beethoven was a crass individual, but he was a genius and is a historical figure. I have a problem with inventing a character in such a famous and talented man's life for box-office purposes. Uninformed people will believe the story. The amazing performance by Ed Harris and Diane Kruger saved this movie. If not for the acting, the movie itself is a flop, in my opinion.

The Director portrays Beethoven as a crass individual. Although I agree that he was a tortured genius and probably not very nice to be around at times, I doubt he ever exposed his rear end to anyone. The best thing going for this movie are the scenes of Ed Harris portraying Ludwig conducting the ninth symphony. Don't bother with this film - but DO listen to some Beethoven instead!

I watched this movie twice because I am a Beethoven nut and after the 2nd time, I just thought to myself, no wonder people today in our society, no nothing about history. This Flick, is a stupid untrue story about one of the 3 greatest composers ever in the history of music. I mean, who comes up with this crap??!!. Beethoven could not hear anything during his last few years and he did not conduct his 9th symphony. Also, as far as the historic content of the movie, uh, Mr. director, who ever you are, conductors didn't even use batons until the late 1800's. As long as directors and writers continue to produce movies like this, our society will become stupider and stupider! Just because a movie is cute, doesn't make it right to tell an untrue story, to a society filled with people, who get their information from movies and the internet. I will say though that Ed Harris did look exactly like Beethoven, in certain scenes.

If you are an aspiring filmmaker You should watch this film and take pride in knowing there is plenty of room for directors in Hollywood. I can't believe a standing ovation was given for this in Toronto. I stopped taking it seriously when Beethoven could hear as he was writing his 9th symphony !!!! Then the movie became laughable when a female student CORRECTED Beethoven on his notes....and said that she was certain that he meant to write it this certain way!!! If you would like to watch a story of a composer and a female transcriber you may enjoy this. but, if you want to watch something on Beethoven rent "Immortal Beloved" !
