Beaches (1988)
Member Rating:
Based on a novel by Iris Rainer Dart, Beaches traces the 30-year oil-and-water friendship between free-spirited Bronx Jew CC Bloom (Bette Midler) and uptight San Francisco WASP Hillary Essex (Barbara Hershey). The two meet as children in Atlantic City (played by Mayim Bialik and Marcie Leeds) and are reunited in the 1960s, when CC is a struggling singer and Hillary is trying to break free from her staid upbringing by becoming an activist. The two ladies room together, then fall out when both are attracted to off-Broadway producer John Pierce (John Heard). CC wins John, but she quickly outgrows him as she matriculates into a bawdy performer. The recently patched-up friendship between CC and Hillary is torn asunder again when Hillary and her new husband express distaste for CC's performing style. Comes the 1970s, and CC and Hillary are reunited after shedding their respective spouses. Broke again, they once more become Manhattan roommates. Their bond strengthens, but there is tragedy in store for the duo. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Not a particularly good film In fact it's pretty corny. But the young Bette is terrific, and I don't mind hearing the Divine M sing no matter how bad the movie.

This is a story for anyone who has a true standing friendship. This story tells the meaning of love, support and sacrifice between friends. I have seen this movie at various stages of my life and it takes on different meanings each time. This is a movie I just shared w/my 12 yr. old daughter, so that she will know how to be a life long friend & to truly respect the wishes of others. Enjoy!

I never was interested in Bette Midler, but one night there was nothing on TV and this movie was on TMC so I decided to check it out. I was sucked in immediately! And at the end I was completely sobbing! I now have a new found appreciation for Bette and am renting all her other movies to see what I have been missing out on.

If anything, you should watch this movie due to Bette's performance. I'm a big fan of her's and love her music, but never appreciated her acting until this movie hit my DVD player. It's one of those that you can watch over and over. Of course it's a complete "chick flick"! Bring your tissue though for sure. As soon as they started with the "wind beneath my wings" i started and didn't finish until the credits. I thought this was an excellent movie and a very touching movie about how much friendship is so important to have, and to cherish what you've got.

this movie is a big waste of time to watch for a number of reasons, but mostly because of the rating. A PG-13 movie shouldn't have obscenity in it's script. Given, it was only 1 little word(near the end of the film), but in that case the film should have been rated R. this is not a film I recommend you watch with children or young teens, It projects an image that is degrading and repulsive. I myself don't like this film for my own reasons, but unlike other reviewers I don't put down a film because of religion. However, this film is still terrible in other ways, it's truely FAKE in it's approach PLAIN and SIMPLE... What a waste of time.
