This is perhaps one of the worst movies I can recall seeing in some time. Slow to develop and disjointed plot line. I felt no empathy for any of the characters and there is a lot that could have been done (but wasn't) with this story. Mix of modern music into period piece was also distracting. Perhaps it will appeal to other's interest, but a complete waste of my time.

Dunst gives an impressive performance portraying (Coppola's interpretation of) Marie Antoinette alongside a nicely-chosen cast of sometimes big-name, sometimes not-so-big-name actors. The modernity of the film leaves behind the politics and focuses on painting a deep portrait of a young woman forced to live a life planned for her. With a dark set, muted blue costumes, and snow-white towering hair, Dunst surprises audiences with the ability to feel--mostly depressed--and shows us how lonely the world can be, even when an entire country rallies behind you.

I would has looking for more history and instead I got a director who thinks everything should be communicated through scenery and costumes and long pans of the scenes...please - I would have settled for a little history in the special effects but not even there did they provide anything decent - too too artsy for me.

As another reviewer said that's time I'm never going to get back. Couldn't care about the characters, all seemed shallow and stupid. Historically I knew what was going to happen and towards the middle of the movie I wanted it to happen quicker. Tortuously tried to be something but never figured out what exactly that was. For anyone thinking of watching this "PUT THE MOVIE DOWN AND BACK AWAY...QUICKLY!"

I avoided watching this movie, I was put off by the rock music adaptation to the film. Shortly after I returned from my trip to Europe and visiting Versailles I became curious and rented the movie. I was pleasantly surprised by Ms. Coppola's version and appreciated her attention to detailing her interpretation of the book. The palace, the surrounding structures and the grounds are breathtaking, I especially loved Marie Antoinette's farm and cottage. This movie did an exquisite job of showcasing these sites and a side of Marie Antoinette we rarely hear of. I loved those colors!! Bravo, Sofia!

I must have misunderstood what this film was to be about. I had thought it would be a new understanding of the story of Marie Antoinette. I was dissappointed to see it look like a follow-up to Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventure. Perhaps it will grow a cult following of its own.
