I can see how some people could think it's too slow but I liked the unrushed pacing. Showing Louis and Maries deaths would have taken away from the film, I thought the ending was...poignant and a lot more moving than a beheading could ever be. A big thumbs up! Read More I loved this movie, adored this movie--how could the Cannes audience boo when they saw it? Not so sophisticated after all for what is post-modern if not the juxtaposition of assorted and clashing elements and it all comes out absolutely right. What an eye Coppola has. The colors are worth the price of admission--pistachio, coral, champagne, hot pink. Kirsten Dunst is sublime. People objected to the rock soundtrack--didn't they hear the Scarlatti as well? Have we ever seen a royal biography such as this? Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

I wish it gave some more historical information. Did not like the ending at all. It just sort of stopped. It would have even benefitted by some words/naration at the end that told what really happened in history. Left me with lots of unanswered questions. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More I heard Marie Antoinette was bad, but the costumes, set, and lighting made me want to see it. I soon learned that those things can't make up for a spotty plot and little dialouge. This movie has long, drawn out scenes of dancing, eating, and even walking accompanied by 20th-21st century rock and pop music. It's hard to imagine, but this movie's visual extravagance is boring. It really does not tell a story, as it spends more time on dinner scenes than explaining how or why MA suddenly wants to live in the country or takes up singing. The French revolution only comes into play during the last few minutes. This movie is a let-down and a snore, and it doesn't reveal anything--historical or not--about Marie Antoinette or Louis. Yes, the music was way off base and should have never been used in this movie. The costumes were exquisite and beautiful, the scenes breathtaking and the set itself was fabulous. But the story line was a bit weak and boring. I like Kirsten Dunst as an actress and thought she played the part well. But I feel the movie could have explained more for those of us who don't know the story and could maybe have been narrated to make it more interesting. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More The movie was good, in the sense that it was modernized & fun. But let's face it, do not look for an accurate historical interpretation in a Coppola movie, people! M.A. actually contributed quite a bit to charities, and was villianized far more than the movie allowed. They even killed off the wrong kids, & completely forgot one! Don't go into it looking to b.s. your way through a history report. Watch the movie if you liked 'A Knight's Tale.' The premise is the same - a bunch of crap in the guise of a period piece that is actually a lot of fun if you don't take it seriously. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
