I have heard about this movie and the book all my life. I finally watched it and it is an amazing story. For me, as a writer, the story must come first, before any special effect. This is a thought-provoking and intelligent story, reminding us that people with the misfortune of having mental illness are still exactly that...PEOPLE. I highly recommend the film and now I see what all the hubbub about Jack Nicholson is--he's an amazing actor. This movie, and it's actors, certainly deserved all of the awards it was honored with.

Being a literary person, I could hardly wait to read this story. I found the book to be fabulous, one of the greatest stories in literature, very best from Ken Kesey. And, of course, I watched the movie adaptation soon afterwards. What I found: Nicholson giving one of, if not the best, roles of his careeer as Randle McMurphy, Fletcher as an award-worthy ice-woman nurse, and a movie that was decent, but lacked the spirit of the book. The whole storyline was pretty much the same, with only a few changes (one of which was the creation of Chris Lloyd's character), but for me, the movie failed to convey the same powerful message as the book did. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good movie with one of the most gut-wrenching last scenes in movie history, but again, if you want to enjoy it, read the book.

The acting in this movie is Stellar, and endlessly stimulating. I had forgotten how enthralling it is. It is one of only a few R rated movies that I will watch. It was a depressing story that didn't leave me depressed. Instead, I felt uplifted and encouraged to uplift those around me to be healthier and happier. Thanks, McMurphy.
