In 40 yrs. I've seen plenty of good movies! I think I've seen most of the westerns. This one, to me, is by far the best of them all, next to the Clint Eastwood westerns. I love the music, the panoramic filming, and perhaps some of the stereo-type cowboys. The actors-awesome! Gina is as sexual as any woman can ever be-"a delicious perfomance!" Bronson, Fonda, Robbards and Ferreta-the cripple, give a tremendous perfomance! I love the inevitable ending! See it if your a true western dude! It's THE BEST!

It's easy to see why so many people can't stand Once Upon a Time in the West; all of the most derogatory put-downs heaped on it are true: self-indulgent, slow-moving, confusing... yes, yes and hell yes! BUT if you are interested in the concept of Western-as-American-mythology and you can accept characters meant to represent not people but symbols then you will be more likely to agree this is a masterpiece of film-making - it sure isn't entertainment. The accompanying commentary soundtrack, though loaded with some disappointments, goes a long way in helping the student understand what Leone was saying, why he wanted to say it, how they got Jack Elam's fly to act and why you probably don't want to meet John Carpenter anyway.

This is one of the few films I have seen that makes my heart sing. There's no other way to describe it. It does not surprise me that some call it slow, boring and long, but to me it is about as good as films get. You just gotta let it draw you in and adapt to it's deliberate pace. The visuals are breathtaking, the score is fantastic, the characters are different from the "Dollars" trilogy but still great and the story and the way it is told is satisfying. Just let it do its thing.

I don't understand why everyone seemed to love this movie, it's horribly slow. In fact it should be titled "People Looking". That's all the director seems to film.... people looking. People looking for minutes at a time, someone else looks, she looks, he looks, then something finally happens. Time to show people looking some more. I just about pulled my hair out. I love a good western, but this one is not.
