A classic. Still holds up for a 50+ year-old movie. Captures the struggle of the blue-collar worker. Rent it if you have never seen this movie. You'll find out why Brando is one of the best.

I usually don't like "Oldies", but this one was a delight. Of course, compared with today's movies, it was slower and overacted - except for Brando. I've heard this movie made him - can see why.

I watched "On the Waterfront" because of a partial scene that kept appearing in specials. The scene had the quote: "I could have been a contender! I could have been somebody!" Of course the movie was much more than the quotation. The movie is about corruption in a longshoreman's union, and how corruption interfered with the workers and two particular families. At the beginning, a man was murdered for wanting to talk to the police. His sister, on a visit home from college, insisted on knowing what really happened, so her investigation moved the plot along. The movie includes betrayal, righteous indignation, a relationship between two opposite personalities, and the destruction of the corruption by a man who lived on its edge. The movie was compelling, and held my attention to the very end. It deserved all the Academy Awards.

What a classic movie ! I have heard about this movie for 40-years, and never saw it until tonight. Brando is so vulnerable - so charasmatic. But what a brilliant performance Karl Malden did, too ! He truly shined and made the movie outstanding ! Lee J. Cobb was incredible as the "boss man thug" - and played his role perfectly. Great story line - I can now see what I have missed after all these years.

Wow. Marlon Brando was before my time -- and now I know what I was missing. Some of the best acting I've ever seen on screen. This was a fantastic movie. It's about the struggle of a washed-up boxer trying to balance a fledgling relationship in the mob with his desire to pave his own way (and his guilty conscience). Required viewing for... everyone.

This is a true classic from director Elia Kazan. Marlon Brando is in top form here; portraying the leader of a gang. Highly recommended for those who like good drama.

This movie lives up to the awards and commentary. Story, acting , directing are all excellent. I found the music track unfortunate, however. It distracted. I could have done without music entirely. The story was powerful enough on its own. At the very least, however the choice of when music was introduced and the type of music (wierd jazz?) detracted from rather than supporting the story.
