I had never sat down and watched the whole thing till now. What an amazing film, I was stunned. Marlon Brando and Karl Malden are in a league of there own. Read More I am not a big fan of Hollywood films from the 1950s but On The Waterfront is one of my favorite films. This film does an excellent job of showing the moral dilemna faced by the men who worked for the union boss who controlled their economic fate. I found the performances of Marlon Brando, Karl Malden and Eva Marie Saint to be very powerful and moving. Marlon Brando's performance is truly one of the finest I have ever seen.Kazan's direction in this film is truly excellent. The depth of the story in the film as well as the visuals are far superior to even the better films of this era. The only weakness of the film is the happy ending which seemed forced and was probably mandated by the studio sponsoring the film. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

The acting was good, and the story engrossing enough. I question how realistic it is tho, that the mob actually let Brando go as far as to testify against them without getting to him first. The music was a bit much, and didn't fit the mood of the scenes in the movie. I'm glad I saw it, and don't feel that I wasted my time. However, I was not ecstatic about it. Read More One of the best acting performances I have ever seen is given by Brando as Terry Malloy in "On The Waterfront". It's not just his "I coulda been a contendah" sp*ech; it's every little mannerism, nuance, and inflection. Tension, fear, revulsion and shame, each of his emotions is displayed guardedly, but oh so poignantly. Yet ... when Brando/Malloy's passion ignites, blam! Karl Malden is the perfectly cast Father Barry, the tough-as-nails priest in this tale of moral corruption and redemption, who's equally unafraid of digging out the truth as facing down the Mob. Don't be scared off by the violence (which is tame by today's standards, anyway); the scenes between Brando and Eva Marie Saint (as Edie Doyle) are as romantic as they come. A great story and a superb cast equal a classic movie under the direction of Elia Kazan. While it may seem dated with its juxtaposition of longshoreman corruption and innocence, it resonates with timeless themes of justice, retribution, courage and redemption.
