Baxter (1989) Reviews

Baxter (1989)
Member Rating:
The French-filmed Baxter is based on the American novel Hell Hound. The title character is a bull terrier, who in the course of the film has many masters--and for good reason. Baxter has been instrumental in the deaths or serious injuries of most of the human beings who've come in contact with him. The dog's latest owner is a young neo-Nazi. nd Baxter makes it quite clear (to the audience at least) what he has in store for this fellow. Don't be misled by the title or the fact that the leading character is a dog with a full range of human emotions; Baxter is not a family film. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A rather bold film from France which examines the origins of violence through the eyes of a terrier and his maladjusted boy master. This film's script is completely amoral...it really is quite unusual in that regard. The director presents the actions and attitudes of the characters without trying to condemn, or justify. This is no morality play. It is also NOT a family film. Besides the pervasive cruelty and violence, there are also sexual elements which are standard fare for continental films of this vintage. In many regards, watching Baxter is like watching a train wreck : witnessing something tragic with no ability to modify the outcome. Baxter is a fine piece of filmkraft which may not appeal to the general viewer.

OK, I knew I was in trouble with this movie when the dog in the movie is not the same dog that is on the cover art or even the main menu! The dog on the cover appears to be a pit bull - snarling and frothing blood. The ACTUAL dog in the movie is a Bull Terrier. For you non AKC members - that would be the Spud's McKinzie dog. Thats right, that carefree beer swiling mutt from those 80's Bud Light commercials has apparently followed Johnny Depp to France where he is making low budget art house "horror" films. The only person this film might scare are Miller Light drinkers. The reason that I put those little things around the word horror is that the only "horror" in this film is the abuse that is done TO the dog! This French film is slow , boring and has absolutely no horror or suspense. If you want a scary dog movie rent Cujo, if you want a great independent horror flick rent May - but whatever you do stay way from this dog - because it fails on every level!

I simultaneously agree and strongly disagree with Weldon W's review. This movie is NOT in anyway a horror movie, and the dog on the cover indeed does not match the dog in the film. DO NOT BE MISLED by the sentence in the description "Don't be misled by the title or the fact that the leading character is a dog with a full range of human emotions; Baxter is not a family film." Although true that this is NOT a family film, there is nowhere near the amount of gore or violence suggested by the description. Baxter actually never even kills, or attacks anyone seriously in the film. All that being said, this was a good movie, very original, with great monologue through Baxter's P.O.V., I thought it was very interesting and well done, despite being let down by a lack of violence.

Very disturbing but very well worth the rental.Imagine if Cujo could think or if Spuds Mckenzie turned Psycho.Forget Beethoven,Baxter is the new dog on the block.

I don't know why I even watched this movie. I thought it was so disturbing, to think of a pet like that was so creepy. I especially hated it when the little boy killed him. To film something like that, a child killing, that is just wrong.

I rented this several years ago on VHS. That cover was a sunny yellow with the bull terrier thinking somewhat dark but semi-amusing thoughts. That cover lead a friend and I to believe it was a dark comedy. Oh were we wrong. This movie is just disturbing without being interesting. Just messed up for the sake of being messed up, I think. I tried to give it a fair shake, but in the end, it really is one of my least favorite movies of all time.

I am with Weldon W on this one.....the front cover shows a american pit bull yet in the movie its a terrier....this movie was a rejected outcast of Milo and Otis....please....for petes sack dont waste ur time renting this movie....horrible acting and the dog has thoughts....i mean come on....i bet the director had watched this mistake of a movie enough times to where he shots himself if he has not already.

This is a french film with english subtitles. It's the dog talking and there's nothing scary about it. Horrible picture.

This movie was troubling, cruel, and just plain terrible! The dog is hit and smacked numerous times. The screenplay is terrible. The actors/ actresses are horrible. From the cover you think it may be a good film. Within a few minutes of the movie starting, you are left wondering .... "is this really the movie I rented?" It is also in subtitles!
