Read More Acting and special effects have come a long way in the last 35 years as evidenced by this cheesy sci-fi featuring a period-reflecting Charlton Heston who spends much of his screen time bare-chested while wildly shooting up cultish, but intelligent zombies. This film has plenty of fodder for film students interested in the societal conflicts of the 1970âs, but unless you have a thing for half-naked, misogynistic, middle-aged actors shooting up self-righteous, insane, decomposing humans, I wouldnât bother. I doubt this film would have been revived if not for âI am Legendâ, the modern remake. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More Much like another reviewer, I have always remembered this one from my youth. You have to read the book as Matheson is one of the best writers of the 20th century. Stephen King credits him as having written the definitive haunted house book, Hell House, and has having been one of the greatest influences on his own writings. I love that they were able to film this in downtown L.A. on weekends without having to do much because it was a veritable ghost town. When I saw the initial preview for I Am Legend with Will Smith, I had to throw this one into my queue and watch it again. I especially like the opening sequence where he derides the rotted corpse on the car lot sales floor. I highly recommend seeing this as it is classic Charleton Heston and a good story. Read More PG? sure. just be careful. there are a few scenes where you see a completely nude woman. front view AND back view. the effects are really bad. no suspense. the score was completely off - feels more like a 70's swanky love movie that takes place mostly in a meadow. lovers romping through the fields. not the score of a sci-fi / suspense. fantasy..maybe. at the end, you just feel weird. The zombies (you can't really call them zombies) were stupid looking. I started calling the leader "super cool" since they all wore sunglasses at night, they were more comedic looking (and not in a good way) than anything else. I give the movie an F. First of all, one of my pet peeves: cartoonish villains. The zombie leaders are evil just for the sake of it. Why did they decide that zombies and normal people couldn't live together? There isn't a reason. And the other zombies are worse; if the mutation they underwent had no effect on their brains, then why do they assume the roles of brainless minions, walking around spouting clichéd villain lines and blindly obeying their leaders as if hypnotized? (If they were trying to criticize politics, they did an awful job.)
Second of all, a bad choice of heroine. On the DVD, a woman states that she gave the film a black heroine in the spirit of the Black Power movement. That's bogus. The heroine has nothing to do with Black Power and everything to do with blaxploitation. It's like she came right out of a cliché catalogue. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
