Garry Marshall directed this film which starts as a light comedy but moves into heavy-duty drama later on. David Basner (Tom Hanks in a good performance) works in an ad agency, where he enjoys bantering with his co-workers and meets a lot of women. He hasn't been especially close to his father (Jackie Gleason) and never thought about him much until his Dad is left devastated when his wife of 36 years walks out on him. He is soon faced with serious health problems as well. This propels the elder Basner on a downward slide that affects David and their relationship. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Yes, it's somewhat dated by its soundtrack and comic comedy antics. But that's part of it's charm for me. I loved the movie when it was new and it's a bit of a time capsule for me. The pace is a little slow and some of the scenes are more "t.v." than "movie", but over all it's a very touching movie with an ending that gets me every time. If you hate the 80's, stay away! But I love the 80's and am not offended by 1986-ish feel of this one.

Although I have seen that others have panned this movie, I enjoyed the light comedy and seeing Tom Hanks moving into a more serious role. The last third of the movie was very moving.

Though some of the story was a little risque, for my teenagers it was a learning movie for them and life throws you unexpected curves but that doesn't mean the outcome is always going to be for the bad!!!

It was not a bad movie, it just was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be a father/son drama, but it was mostly a Hanks vehicle (he was good) with the father/son dynamics coming more at the end.

Very good movie. Very funny an sad at the same time. Very well done.

Starts out a comedic showcase for Hanks, but skids into a film about healing/discovering past relationships. Gleason had some great lines , but the movie did a poor job of showing the serious and lighter side of reconnecting with a parent.

The plot was poor, the humor silly and lame. Reminiscent of Tom Hank's early 'Bosom Buddies' work. Don't waste your time.

Don't waste your time renting this AWFUL movie. We tried watching for 45 minutes and finally gave up. A complete waste of acting talent. I can't believe Tom Hanks consented to do this boring movie.

What a piece of garbage--my wife and I were digusted with every aspect of this movie: the acting, the story line, and worst of all the sappy 80's sound-track. This is a stinker--avoid.
