Jeff Bridges leads the truly gifted cast, but Ted Danson gets special notice. The twisty ending first surprised and then amazed us. A guaranteed belly buster. Hang in there; it's worth it. This is a movie that will play ... Read More .The Amateurs has a very slow and seemingly nonsensical beginning. I almost walked away in the first ten minutes. I'm glad I didn't. Hang in there; it's worth it. This is a movie that will play much better on the second viewing. The characters, who at first seem like a random group of paper doll cut outs, by the end of the movie take on a sort of goofball mythic quality, as does the plot. As the plot develops, each of the characters develops and fulfils an improbably essential destiny, barely hinted at in their introduction. This is not a movie for those who think, as do most film critics, that movies should fit into easily tagable cubbyhole categories. It doesn't. It staunchly refuses to. With enough distribution it will become its own category and a cult classic. This is comedy as myth. Its funny when you watch it and even funnier when you recall it. The cast does a great job, but there's just nothing here. The dialogue is pathetic, the story is plodding, and the direction is lifeless. There were times when Jeff Bridges reminded me of his character in The Big Lebowski (one of the funniest movies ever made), but this movie only shows how brilliant The Big Lebowski was. A meandering plot needs phenomenal dialogue and great direction to make a decent movie. Unlike The Big Lebowski, this one utterly fails in that attempt. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More Sure this movie SOUNDS good because it has a great premise. Here it is: Small town atttempts to shoot porno so producer father (jeff bridges)can make something of himself and win back love of son.But this film is booooring. I would rather watch a BAD porno than THIS movie about trying to make a good porno. If you want a movie about making porno watch "family business". THAT is a four star movie. This movie is Trash. This movie has a GREAT CAST but the script and the direction of the storyline are HORRIBLE and BORING. Even the penis jokes are just lame. The acting is barely passable and jeff bridges just mailed this one in . He really needs better scripts to work with because he went down in flames on this one. If your expecting this movie to be a four star movie you will be sorely dissapointed, it rates only HALF star.If you miss this movie you will not have missed ANYTHING AT ALL.
