Great acting by all involved and the story moves at a nice pace. So much better than Ray and you come away actually liking Cash.

The childhood scenes at the beginning were good. Once the film starts on the drug angle, it stalls. Very much like "Ray." An hour of drug related scens could be compressed in 15 minutes without any harm to the story. Joaquin Phoenix is an interesting actor. I just never bought him as Cash. He sounds just like ANOTHER c&w star, (can't remember who) just not Johnny. Fast forward through the music and "Johnny's stoned again" scenes and enjoy the flick.

I know its based on a somewhat true story. But you'll find this story to be repetitive with other movies under this genre. Too predictable and this would be popular if it made it back in 1995!! ...

I really liked this movie. There were parts of Johnny Cash's life I didn't realize that happened, including the relationship with his father. I wish it had gone deeper into his life instead of focusing a great deal into the music and concerts, and just the relationship between Cash and June Carter(Reese Witherspoon) although the they were really good. Joaquin Phoenix and Witherspoon were equally impressive in thei performances. 4/5

Right up front, this movie is worth a rental, but not a purchase. The performances throughout the movie are excellent, but I suspect there was some serious work done in post-production to get the vocals just right (not a bad thing... Phoenix did an outstanding job overall). Throughout the movie I kept thinking of a few other things, like: "aren't there some REAL country singers who could have done these roles", "I remember Johnny Cash as a more manly kinda man", "Doesn't his dad look like that guy from T2", "Is he crying again" and of course "When is this movie going to end". Needless to say, when there was no singing going on, there were other things to think about. Seems like the Director should have left some of the meat in the film (reference to the Director's comments in the outakes section.)

If you love Johnny Cash, this movie is for you. Personally, I thought it was a poor imitation focused exclusively on a short portion of Cash's life. It left me wondering what happened in the remainder of his life. Especially since his death was recent, it would have been important to include the latter years.
