Setting, costumes etc seemed authentic. The anger and hatred between Hayek and Farrel to create the conflict in the story was a little over the top. The acting was very good despite that. The other conflict with Farrel's character figuring out how to become a good writer was well done. I would definitely recommend renting this movie. This is a chick flick and i can understand men giving it a bad review.

Ask the Dust is plain and simply a bad movie. As I watched the movie, I found myself "asking" myself alot of questions. Why should I care about this worthless deadbeat writer? Why should I care about this waitress? Why should I care about their relationship when they suck as characters and they hate eachother? All they do is fight. Seriously, Who cares about this story? Well, as the movie wore on, I grew more intolerant. It's so slow and boring. I started fast forwarding just to get it over with. Now I know why Selma gets nude in the film, it was the only thing they could sell to get people to watch. Trust me, it's not enough. This movie sucks - Skip it.

This was a perfect example of a good storyline with a complete failure in execution. The acting was unforgivable. The driving force of the movie is supposed to be a firey romance...but the actors had negative chemistry. It was like watching a brother and sister being forced to kiss each other while sitting on a wet blanket! Don't waste your time on this one.

There is a "rule" in screenwriting -- don't use voice-over narration. If you can't show your story happening and therefore need narration, then you need to rethink your movie. While I don't think this is true as a universal rule -- there are some narrated films that work, "A Christmas Story," for example -- with "Ask the Dust" I kept asking myself, "Why am I watching a movie when it seems like our protagonist is reading the entire novel to me?".... Slow pacing... bad acting... uninspired direction.... John Fante's novel by this title is good, though.

Movie is great to fall asleep to. Moves very slowly and is extremely boring.
