A middle-aged man finds a callow twentysomething usurping his professional life and worming his way into his family in this alternately funny and poignant comedy drama. Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) is a middle-aged man who has spent 20 years as the head of advertising sales for "Sports America," a leading athletics magazine. Dan is happily married to Ann (Marg Helgenberger) and has a college-age daughter, Alex (Scarlett Johansson), whom he dotes on, but Dan's comfortable life is given a major shake-up when a large multimedia firm buys the magazine. Seen as a bit long in the tooth to be truly competitive, Dan is demoted to second in command of advertising, and his position is handed over to Carter Duryea (Topher Grace), a 26-year-old who talks a good game about sales but has no practical experience in the field. Dan's wounded ego makes working with the arrogant Carter an uphill battle, but when he learns that Ann is expecting another baby, Dan is in no position to quit. Before long, Dan becomes aware of Carter's intense insecurities about his new job as the younger man reaches out to him for guidance, but this doesn't make Dan any less angry when Carter begins a romance with Alex after his marriage to Kimberly (Selma Blair) crashes and burns. In Good Company marked the solo directorial debut of Paul Weitz; he previously worked in collaboration with his brother Chris Weitz, who serves as producer on this film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace were both great; but somehow something about this film didn't quite gel. A little slow moving - a little too long, often the soundtrack was a little trudging along as well - I'd like to rate this higher just on performances (which were good) but the movie itself is fair at best. Little fish / big fish tale that could have been better served.

This is definitely a film worth seeing. Overall it is a feel good movie with good humor and decent storyline. Topher Grace was surprisingly good and held his own against Scarlett Johansen and Dennis Quaid.

if you have lost your job recently, this is not the movie for you. Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) finds out his company bought and they are bringing in a younger guy to replace him and they fire alot of his team leaders and to boot, his wife just finds out she is pregnant and his daughter has left for college and sleeping with "guess who", you got it, his new boss. If you have nothing better to do - watch this.

The movie is entertaining and surprisingly true-to-life inasmuch as all too frequently some hot shot big company takes over a smaller business and goes in trying to "improve" things all willy-nilly, all the while, the newbies don't know what they are doing. Kudos to the screenwriter for developing a story in which ultimately the RIGHT thing gets done (THAT'S what's usually missing in real life). Good movie!

The film is both endearing and sobering as the central character's professional and personal life are told. Dennis Quaid's character, a devoted father and seasoned sales/marketing professional who may soon lose his job as his company is taken over, is contrasted ably by Topher Grace. Grace's character is in in distinct contrast to Quaid's. Topher is 26 years younger, but able, experiencing a recently failed relationship, and Quaid's new boss. Life is a peach, depending on who's eating it. The story was engaging, accurately reflective of professional insecurity in today's corporate America, but ultimately reconfirms for the viewer the good that life offers if we accept it.

“In Good Company” is one of the big surprises of the season. This was a strong cast developeing a plot quickly and then delivered much better results then the critics have lead you to believe. Dennis Quaid is an old time salesman with good moral values. He is expecting to be promoted to sales manager, only to find out the company has been sold and if he is lucky he won’t lose his job. His new boss is half his age and knows nothing about his new job what-so-ever. Quaid isn’t a happy camper and soon becomes even more unhappy to find out that his daughter is dating his new boss. Things develop quickly in this film, and lessens well learned as well as strong moral convictions bing things into perspective in the end, This is a terrific family movie that merits your attention

Not as expected--marketed as a comedy--but it's a nice drama with laughs and an "old" versus "young" storyline for the aging baby boomers. Pleasant, believable characters with a plot that doesn't always let you guess what's coming next.

If that's what you're looking for, great. But I hope you weren't expecting it to be anything more than that.
