My 13 year old daughter invited her friend over for all of us to watch this chick flick. It showed Cameron Diaz almost naked WAY to much. For a PG-13 movie we found several of the scenes to be inappropriate. It was well done. Interesting story. Good acting except for Ken Howard and Candace Azzara (playing the father and step-mother). Although their roles were integral to the story, they came across one dimensional.
Oddly, one of the most intersting aspects of the film was the use of color in the set designs and costumes. In most of Shirley MacLaines scenes she was surrounded by vibrant shades of aqua, coral, and amber. Yes, we get it. We are in Florida in those scenes.
I liked Shirley MacLaine playing it a bit subdued for a change. She still makes you watch her in every scene she is in. I always enjoy a "Shirley MacLaine" fix. This isn't a movie I would think of watching again. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

It is sooo much more than I expected. It is ... Read More Don't discard this as a chick flick. It's WAY more than that. I'm over 60, male, a movie fan or all types and believe me, this is well worth watching. It is sooo much more than I expected. It is almost flawless in character development. You care very much about the people involved from the first frame. They aren't perfect but you can identify with them and their problems and feelings. Dialogue so natural you feel like you're easedropping on converstaions of real people, not actors. Humor exists but no slapstick or forced laughs. I've enjoyed Diaz, Collette and McClaine over the years but none have been better than in this wonderfully created world by Director Curtis Hanson and super script. If you don't like this film than why waste your time watching movies? Highly under-rated. Why didn't this get more attention?
