Read More For quite some time my wife and I put off watching this DVD--because she didn't want to see a "serious" movie and I didn't want to see two men kissing. But we finally forced ourselves to watch it, and it was amazing. Yes, it was a little tedious for my wife, and I squirmed during the gay love scenes, but the portrayal of their relationship--and its effects on others--was heart wrenching. Heath Ledger, in particular, delvers a performance that is unforgettable and deeply moving. The last twenty minutes are the most touching of all, and I find myself contemplating those twenty minutes every day. This is a movie that ultimately takes us to a whole new plane. This is one of the great ones. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

My husband, father and brothers refused to watch it, but I think they may have gotten something out of it. Many lives were left embittered because these two main characters couldn't be their true selves. Gay guys do deserve human rights - which is what I thought this story was all about. I caught a glimpse at what society expects and how people have to appear to follow along or else they hurt others and themselves. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Rational, open minded people have touted this film as a great love story worthy of all its accolades. The film clearly describes the strife, pains, and tragedies gay people endure. In this story, lies, deceit, and adultery are the result of a prohibitionist society. What would you do if it were suddenly illegal to love someone of the opposite sex? You would, as Jack and Ennis did, carry on your forbidden love affair despite all barriers. This is a love affair, if it were merely lust then you would not see the pain and longing expressed, instead observe callous and irresponsible sexual behavior. Jack and Ennis were seeking happiness together and hoping to satiate their natural predisposition. Whether you believe it is right or wrong, nature vs. nurture, attraction was clearly evident from the start of the film. This was a great love story, much like Romeo and Juliet. Tragedies can be averted if only we would end this disgraceful feud. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I spent some time reading other reviews and I cannot believe the ignorance individuals have in the 21st century! The screenplay was beautifully written. The acting was courageous and genuine. Ang Lee is a genius. The symbolism contrasting the breathtaking wide open spaces implying freedom to be who you are and what happiness is possible in your life versus the poverty stricken and stiffling nature of the place Ennis lived was brilliant film making and just like a good book that you can't put down, this movie will be watched time and time again and placed in my catalog of favorites! May those with such hateful hearts find happiness and contentment in their lives! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Michelle Williams for Best Supporting Actress? Must've been desperate.
Just a very boring, long, drawn-out movie. I kept waiting for it to end.
Oh, and speaking of the end - I replayed it over and over and over so I could hear what Heath Ledger was saying - thought it would be a key part. I finally put on the subtitles (he spoke so quietly that I missed half of his lines) - DUMB! The ending is pretty lame...
Watch this only if you feel like you have to see all of the Academy award nomination films... Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
