FOR BEING MADE IN 1966, IT HELD MY INTEREST THROUGHOUT. IT IS A VERY COMPELLING STORY ON SURVIVAL IN AFRICA WHILE BEING HUNTED DOWN BY BLOODTHIRSTY AFRICAN TRIBESMEN. YOU REALLY PULL FOR THE MAIN CHARACTER AND FEEL FOR HIM AS HE TRIES TO SURVIVE ON HIS OWN WITH BASICALLY NOTHING IN THE WILD, UNPREDICTABLE, AND SCARY LAND OF AFRICA. VERY LITTLE DIALOGUE, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BUT IT WASN'T NECESSARY. THE AFRICANS WERE SPEAKING IN THEIR NATIVE TONGUE THROUGHOUT. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO SUBTITLES, WHICH WOULD HAVE HELPED. Read More Way ahead of it's time in it's unsparing depiction of death and survival in Colonial Africa. Inspired by a true incident from the 1820's West, (with mountain man John Colter being pursued by Blackfeet Indians) This unforgetable adventure is one of my all time favorites. Read More I first saw this twenty five years ago when I was a boy and thought it was excellent. I have been waiting for this to come out on DVD and when it did I snapped it up. Still as good as I remembered. Cornel Wilde was 51 years old when he made this movie, I hope I'm in that good of shape when I'm 40!! Though set in Africa the idea for the movie actually was based on a true story of a trapper chased by American Indians. I think Cornell translated this man-hunt by African tribesmen quite well. I found the idea that he survived quite believable, for someone to be a guide in Africa you would have to be a bad*ss. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

It doesn't have the constant adrenaline rush that Apocalypto has, but "The Naked" prey has enough suspense to keep you going. The fact that the subtitles of the African language aren't included gives us, the viewers, the same "fish out of water" experience that the main character is experiencing--not knowing what to do next or even how. I was disturbed by the elephant killing scene (and who, with a conscience, wouldn't?), but it adds to the themes of the movie (the carnality of the hunt, the seemingly "mighty" brought down, etc.).
