Read More I caught clips of this movie when it was shown on HBO and thought it was going to be slow and depressing. I rented it just because it was filmed in my town --- when I watched the entire film just now it was fantastic! What a great story. More and more famous actors kept popping into the movie .... absolutely worth watching!

Read More I want to give this five stars, but I could have done without some of the gratuitous profanity and I don't need to see people having sex to get the point (though I do appreciate that they spared me the actual nudity). I think I will need to read the book now, because the story drew me in from the first few minutes. I wanted to watch the whole thing in one sitting. The acting was superb and the production quality was very high. Good stuff. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I originally rented this movie due to the actors involved who did a wonderful job with their performances. However, by the end of the series (disk 2) there were some disturbing scenes which took away from the story started in the first half of the series (disk 1). I would never had rented the film if there had been any indication of the event to come. The previews, special features and even the cast picture gave no indication of the disturbing turn in the storyline. The end had me asking the question, what was life affirming about this story? Even the epilogue spoke to how things simply don't change. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

If you watch a lot of movies, there is hardly a cast member you won't recognize. From Paul Newman to Theresa Russell, everyone is perfectly cast and gives a fine performance. I suppose it's because there are so many stories intertwining, that the impact of the overall film gets a little diluted. Or perhaps, it is because the story is a bit soap-operish, that I didn't give it 5 stars. However, the ending is quite shocking, and to their credit, I didn't see it coming. Enjoy! Each time it put me to sleep. This flick tries to hard to live up to the book: yeah, it includes every detail, but at the price of having it move at a snail's pace. There's some good acting, though, which is why I didn't completely pan it. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Also, many of the scenes seem rushed. This is a miniseries, and it seems like they forgot that and tried to shorten the story rather than stay true to the feel of the book. Yes, most of the actors were all very good, but overall I was disappointed with the movie. It doesn't hold a candle to the book. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

There was lots left unanswered and so much potential to this movie. However, after watching the second disk, I'm left so dissatisfied. There were so many things left unsaid or just holes in the plot, and the plot took ugly turns. It left me disturbed instead of inspired, which I had expected to be inspired in the end. Read More Part I of Empire Falls was extremely faithful to the book. Ed Harris is a good choice as Miles Roby although he has little to do other than look pained most of the time. The acting is somewhat overdone but it is good to see the familiar faces back on screen. I am eagerly awaiting part 2 to finish the story. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
