Slow but well-crafted. I was creeped out and the ending was completely open-ended. Choose your own ending! Was it all in his imagination? Was it just a writer expressing frustration at writer's block? Who knows. The characters were not fully developed which gave it an ethereal feel. I LOVED John Candy, of course. He is an excellent actor, and so is John Tuturro. Very imaginative movie, but disturbing also. As always, the Coen brothers find light humor in everything. Amazing.

I read the complaints that this movie is too slow, and all I can think is that some people just need too much action. Try Chuck Norris or something with a lot of exploding helicopters. This film is a brilliant depiction of the slippage into insanity. The pace is measured, not slow. In the end, reality and insanity become inseparable. Turturo and Goodman are both at their best. The ending will blow you away. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, along with "The Big Lebowski" and Jarmusch's "Dead Man." OK, there are lots of others, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.

I'm not sure what I was expecting to see when I opted to rent this movie, but as it turned out, I didn't like it much. It seemed to drag on and on. I almost fell asleep trying to watch it. I'm not very familiar with Joel Coen's or John Turturro's work, which may be part of the problem; and as much as I like John Goodman, and he did play his character quite well (an unexpected plot twist for sure) it just wasn't enough to make me like this movie. And the ending was weird...everything was on fire, yet both characters act like it's a walk in the park. Insanity prevails...too many loose ends and unanswered questions for my liking. I didn't like this movie at all...I just couldn't get into it.
