Robin Williams, David Duchovny, and Anton Yelchin carried this coming of age story. I thought Anton (who played the young character) was fantastic. I did wonder where the Mom thing was going too. I'm glad another reviewer mentioned it, cuz I thought I was the only one. Sleeping under the bed...the indoor basketball...the bathroom scenes. It just started raising yellow flags. Bottom line, very good viewing and is it me, or is Robin Williams becoming the "I play anything" actor. You just can't typcast the guy anymore. Get this one in Q. Worth it. I could relate w/ the lingo and styles of the time, so the film seemed authentic. William's Pappas characther almost seemed "too smart" for the role, however it didn't really take away from the movie. I would definetely recommend this movie! Read More Right after I watched this movie I called my close friends and my mom and said you HAVE to go rent this movie, this is a GREAT movie. I was surprised and how much I enjoyed it. The acting was great, it was funny and heartwarming, I just can't explain how shocked I was that I liked a movie this much. Great Job David Duchovny (writer/director) Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Neither my son nor I enjoyed it that much or understood what the point was. Why did Tommy run away to France and return after more than a decade? What's the point of the woman inmate? The movie doesn't show us anything about Tommy's adult life or his wife and child. They appear to be estranged, but once he tells them the story of his childhood, they all move from France to New York for no apparent reason. Yes, there were some good moments and the acting was good. I generally like coming of age movies, but they usually have some point or show us something profound - this one just didn't. Read More Frankly I don't understand the other reviewers' excitement over this movie. I thought it was very adolescent, implausible, and although I respect Robin Williams, he couldn't help himself throwing in little witty or sarcastic comments that would not likely be uttered by a mentally challenged person. Most of the other characters were undeveloped. In fairness, I only watched a third of it before losing interest. Perhaps I missed something really clever and surprising later on? Somehow I doubt it.
