Read More My wife and I both thought that this movie wasn't all that entertaining. The acting was very good, and the story gradually got better as the movie progressed (we at least started feeling better about Reese), but there were a lot of unanswered questions and unfinished stories at the end of the movie. Honestly that wouldn't be bad if it wasn't also boring. It seems to me like the director/ writer was trying very hard to create a thought-provoking "indie" movie, so hard in fact that the result was derivitive and uninspired. Think Garden State meets Running with Scissors without any of the humor. Also as previously mentioned there is animal cruelty in this movie which I found neither artsy nor necessary to the plot. Read More Although this movie is very moody and introspective, I happened to like the performances by Zooey Deschanel and Will Farrell. Farrell is in a role I've never seen him before(not over the top funny), adding a little humor but basically a weird shy nice guy. Deschanel is depressed for most of the movie, but I'm sure many people can relate to her and her family issues. Add on a great indie soundtrack, and this movie is engaging in my opinion and has a good ending. Slow at times, but overall good if you don't mind it's moody and introspective undertones. DVD left a little to be desired, very short making of featurette that seemed like an afterthought. Also the picture quality is not the best but ok, since this disc has 2 sides with a fullscreen and widescreen presentation, each side is only 4.5 gigs, so the movie and short extras is crammed on each side. Read More Outstanding soul wrenching performance by Ed Harris. Will Ferrell gives a totally dramatic and quite touching performance himself, and for me his best ever. A young actress in NYC (Zooey Deschanel) journeys home to find her once famous writer and now reclusive father has taken two eccentric misfits into his home while he lives in the garage. She struggles to understand her father and her mothers passing and get her own life in order. There are small problems with this story-line (as in she shows up addicted to crack-cocaine and somehow just gets better - not that easy in real life - that and other little things keep this from being perfect)This is a dark film - but not without hope. Anyway, the acting is O.K.. Will Farell really is doing something you wouldn't expect from him. If you are very bored - I mean the type of bored where even a sleeping pill would wake you up, then you could watch this film. Read More This is one of those Indie/artsy films, where the director shakes the camera and makes it look like a home movie, and films basically nothing but boring drivel and calls it an Indie film. I should have known better. Will Ferrel has made some stupid movies and this one tops the charts. Made it through an hour and 20 minutes before I just had enough.
