Moulin Rouge (1952)

Moulin Rouge is the story of 19th century French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, portrayed by José Ferrer. The film records his frustration over his physical handicap (the growth in his legs was stunted by a childhood accident), his efforts to "lose" himself in Paris' bawdy Montmartre district, and his career as a painter, which brought him money only when he turned out advertising posters--but what posters! Toulouse-Lautrec's drinking and debauchery lead to his early death, which in the hands of director John Huston is staged (brilliantly) in the manner of a musical comedy finale. This is the film in which Zsa Zsa Gabor actually acts, in the role of demimonde entertainer Jane Avril. As a bonus, the film's musical score (by Georges Auric) managed to hit the Top Ten charts in the U.S. When this immensely successful film was released to television in the late '50s, Moulin Rouge proved to be one of the strongest-ever incentives to purchase a color TV set. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I rented this movie to learn more about Touluse-Loutrec and was extremely pleased not only to gain a wealth of information about his life and about Paris in the late 1900's, but this movie was very insiteful, entertaining and tastefully done!

Quite different from the more modern version, this movie captures many of the delightful quirks of 50s-era film-making. Jose Ferrer does a brilliant job portraying Toulouse-Lautrec.

Filmed as though the whole movie was a Lautrec painting, absolutely beautiful. Mel Ferrer was great as Lautrec and he managed to convey the deep sadness and self-hatred but ultimate humanity of the main character. Zsa-Zsa plays herself in just about every role she has ever had but for once, playing Zsa-Zsa was just the right touch for the character of Jane Avril. No one else could have done it better.

This movie was all over the place for me, and has not aged well. I got a good laugh out of the various methods they used to "shrink" Jose Ferrer (Lautrec). In some scenes, he's got his knees stuffed into shoes. In others, filmed from the waist up, he's obviously duck-walking like Chuck Berry. In long shots, they're using a body double who's limping. In the scenes where they show what Lautrec is drawing or painting, you can see it's someone else's hand reaching in from the side. As far as the acting, it ranges from good to overly dramatic. Some parts were boring and full of highfalutin dialogue, which did not sound natural. It makes me wonder if it came from letters he wrote or something. I was also struck by how at that time "cripples" were often treated as if they were sub-human, which had a huge effect on his self esteem. I don't think I would recommend the movie unless you're a fan of Lautrec's work and want to know something more about the artist or the scene at the Moulin Rouge.

This is a supreme waste of time. My bride and I HATED this movie. We saw it in a theatre and after I suggested we leave 40 minutes into the film, my wife told me she wondered why I waited so long. Had we not been at a charity screening, we would have insisted upon a refund. This was only the second film we have walked out on in thirty+ years. For what it's worth, I have been unable to find a single movie critic who even disliked this movie. Am I alone on this one?

I ordered this movie twice and both times received the Nicole Kiddman psycho-circus highlights blob instead. So I'll try to get it from Netflix.
