Directed by Peter Chelsom, this film is the English-language remake of Masayuki Suo's 1995 romantic comedy of the same name; the Japanese version earned a record-breaking 9.5 million dollars in United States box offices. Shall We Dance? revolves around John Clark (Richard Gere), a workaholic Chicago lawyer who, despite a respectable paycheck and loving family, is unable to shake the feeling that something in his life is missing. On a whim, John disrupts his normal evening commute to attend a dance class in hopes of meeting Paulina (Jennifer Lopez), a beautiful dance teacher he would occasionally spot gazing out of the studio windows. Though Paulina quickly lays to rest any preconceived romantic notions John may have had about her, she nonetheless forms a bond with him that goes beyond those normally held by a teacher and student. Invigorated with his new hobby, John focuses his newfound enthusiasm into training for an upcoming dance competition; however, he chooses not to let his wife (Susan Sarandon) in on his plans. Unaware that dance may be, in fact, saving her marriage, John's wife becomes suspicious of all the time he spends away from home and hires a private investigator to find out whether or not her husband is having an affair. Ultimately, John is forced to examine how his old dreams fit in to his new life. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

I thought it was cute and am glad I rented it. Stanley Tucci was terrific in it. Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon were very good too. I know Jennifer Lopez's character is sad in the movie, but her acting seemed somewhat "flat". Patty T.

Loved it ! More of a girls movie - Richard Gere is just soooo cute - no matter what he is in. Jennifer was great also.

I'm sure the story was wonderful, however, I didn't get to experience the movie due to being sent a Japanese version with subtitles.

Fun movie with very inspiring ending. I do not care for Richard Gere but found him endearing in this movie. Jennifer Lopez was restrained but powerful. Susan Sarandon was her usual high impact performer. The music was fun especially the 'Book of Love' by Peter Garbriel!

Pleasant, but a star (or two) less good than the Japanese version.

Wonderful movie. This is my second time seeing it. The first time I didn't realize WHY J Lo's character was so sullen and sad. This time it was obvious. It was a great movie and will be on my 'favorite" list!

This DVD was sent to me in Japanese.....First movie I received and couldn't watch it. However, Blockbuster is sending it to me in English, and sent me a coupon for a free rental at my local store.

Richard Gere is charming as ever, J-Lo's bod is rockin' as ever, however neither was enough to really sell this movie for me. Couldn't decide between 2 or 3 stars - but opted for 3 JUST for the scene at the end when he is riding up the escalator in a black tux and carrying the one long stem red-rose. That was purty - so 3 stars it is (by a rose).
