Anyone who desires a better understanding of immigration issues should watch this. Story is believable and too real for one's "comfort" with the status quo with regards to immigration issues. As some reviewers have mentioned the ending is abrupt but I think one can imagine the rest of the story fairly easily. Well worth a watch. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More An unusually "intimate epic," THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY tells the story of Vietnam and America, 20 years later. You ought to watch this lovely film--which takes place in Vietnam, Malaysia, New York City and Texas--for no other reason than, in this politically divisive time, it wipes away all thoughts blue states versus red states and treats America as unified whole. The story is typical in its generalities, less so in its specifics about a U.S. Soldier, his Vietnamese woman and the offspring of the two. It may open your eyes as to how that offspring is treated in Vietnam. Lead actor Damien Nguyen may be an unknown here in the U.S. but he registers strongly via his physical beauty and his elegant reticence, while known quantities Nick Nolte, Tim Roth, Temura Morrison & Bai Ling are all in fine form. The cinematography is stunning, particularly the Vietnam sequences, and the director has the skill and sense to allows the movie--clichés and all--to unfold in its own time, quietly & movingly. The trailer makes this movie feel like a movie of the week - it's clearly not. Absolutely worth anyone's two hours. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The lack of details in this is just overwheelming. How in the world did the little brother Tam & the main character Bhin learned how to speak English this well? It would've been a wise decision for the director to show Bhin study English at the beginning of the film, demonstrating that he's determined to speak English before he begins his journey for the search of his dad. AWEFUL movie, and what a wast of time it was... Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
