This is my most favorite movie. Great acting. Great music. Beautiful scenery. What sets this movie apart is the theme though, which to me is all about sacrifice - Holding on to what you believe (faith in humanity) and standing up for what is right and just no matter the consequences. It's very poignant.

If asked to list my alltime favorite movies, this one would definitely be in the top few. The character development of DeNiro and Irons is superb, and the film "works" for so many people on so many levels because there are such strong characters with whom so many people can identify. The film depicts a struggle between civilizations that can only be described as "human" on all levels, depicting both the most noble and the most base attributes of humankind. I cannot say enough about the musical score. It is such a poignant blend of western and new-world instrumentation and themes, and the musical symbolism is central to the screenplay. It was said by another reviewer that the battle scenes are not realistic, but I beg to differ. This was not the Battle of Midway. It was a very sad, tragic, and human conflict, and the almost surreal portrayal of the final battle brilliantly depicts the absurdity and futility of warfare.

This is an excellent film depicting the slaughter of greed over an innocent people. The greed is easy to see, in many forms. The most innocent was children. The simple songs from these "stupid savages" (as discribed by the rich, religious priest....but not necessarily faithful) were beautiful. The color of the South American jungle, the passion shown by all sides, the faith shown by Jeremy Iron's character, and the deep heartbreak and disbelief I felt make this film very rememberable. And myself more aware.

This a must see for all with intense historic emphasis. A stunning eyeopener that shows how destrucitve religion and power can be. The music of Enrico Moricone matches perfectly with every mood. A definite tear jerker. Powerful performance by Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons. Worthy of buying and adding to one's movie library.

I personally have been to the Amazon and this film brought back powerful memories of the pristine landscapes and the handsome indigenous people. This story should be told to all as a reminder of the brutal inhumanity that occurred during the colonial period and to drive the hope that we can overcome prejudice.

The music and acting are superb, but the story falls apart at the end, I believe. The battle scenes are not very realistic - would the Guarani and the Jesuits have allowed the Euorpeans to bring the canon all the way to their turf when they could have stopped them, and the tropps, at the falls or in the forest? Not likely. Unfortunately, the ending ruined the movie for me.
