Based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Steven Farley, son of Walter Farley, writer of the original The Black Stallion, The Young Black Stallion is a prequel to the 1979 Academy Award-winning classic starring Mickey Rooney. Directed by Simon Wincer, the film is set during the second World War and follows the adventures of the titular equine as he meets and befriends Neera, a young girl, played by Biana Tamini, who has lost her family in a Middle Eastern desert. Also starring Patrick Elyas and Richard Romanus, The Young Black Stallion was created specifically to be shown in IMAX theaters. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

My daughter (six years old) did enjoy this movie. It was slow and predictable to me, but hey, it was not geared for my age bracket.

This really is a great family flick. Great story and touchingly portrayed.

At least it was short! It did explain where the Black got his name, but didn't hold a candle to the first 2 movies. It seemed too Americanized. The grandfather forbids the girl to ride in the race. Hmm... I wonder what she'll do (about 2 seconds later).

The movie was way short so we spent the rest of the evening watching the extras which was quite fun. My 9 year old daughter really enjoyed it. The scenery was great. The best was watching how they train the horses. A must see. The movie was very short, only ran about 45 minutes.
