First, the military action is very authentic. If you want to know why, there is a feature in the DVD that shows the training the actors went through. The guy who plays the commanding general is the military advisor and his high standards for authenticity show through. Second, a lot of times we forget there are causes worth fighting for. The Japanese were extremely brutal and ruthless in World War 2. Its frightening tho think how things would have turned out had we not decisively defeated them. Third, the movie has strong themes of self-sacrifice and heroism. My only complaint is that there is plot line with the POWs that slows the movie in the middle. However, its good that we see the terrible conditions these men lived under. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More A rock solid film, not afraid to show the outrages committed by the Japanese Imperial Army against Americans. The P.C. revisionists will be offended, (or hopefully enlightened.) This is well worth a look for history buffs. Alas! I ordered the Director's wide screen edition--and was sent the dreaded full screen 1:33 pan and scan, which gives it a kinda "made for T.V. look" . Read More Now that I have made the above statement, I have to say that would include Saving Private Ryan I was able to see an advanced showing of this movie at the NYU film school were my son is attending. When asked if I wanted to see this film, I jumped at the chance. The story is about a company from the 75th Ranger division who do what would seem the impossible. Rescue 527 prisoners from the most amphiumas POW camp in the South Pacific. Benjamin Bratt gives the proformance of his life as the unstoppable Colonel Mucci . The basic plot is that when Mac Aurthur left behind the American troops as he exited the Philippines he vowed to save those soldiers. This movie tells a brutal story of how that was accomplish and the agony of the troops that were held at Cabanatuan. LET ME WARM YOU. Now . . . this movie is not for the weak of stomach. Nothing is left to the imagination. The movie runs a bit more than two hours. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It is a shame that the truth wasn't depicted in a more creative way to give history the respect it deserved. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Rent those flicks, then rent this. It had shoddy costume design, you know where the movie looks like they wanted to save money on production by cheaping out on the costumes? Also, it has the 'cap gun' style weaponry. I don't know if Spielberg or Hanks could have saved this one. Two stars for the brave men who died so this crappy film could be made about their sacrifice.
