This was one of THE most boring movies I have ever watched, and so pointless. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it just never did; don't bother to even rent it!

04/08 Beautiful art direction and cinemetography makes this like one if Veermer's paintings, but with the unspoken passion and romance between people. The movie is great in establishing the affection beween the artist and a model that appreciates his art, through innuendo and nuance. This is contrasted with the high volume shrew of his wife who has all the sensitivity of flatulance. I never caught this on the movie channels from the beginning so I got it from BB and I'm glad that I saw it from the start. The final scene with the patron contemplating the portrait he expected would appeal to his purient interests and which the wife branded as "obscene" leads one to consider whether he knew his expectations were met.

I didn't find this movie slow, maybe because I like these period movies with authentic looking sets and costumes that my imagination makes me wonder what must it be like to be a part of that space and time. All the characters were convincing in their roles & especially the lead actors. You could feel the sexual tensions & jealousy, kudos to the directors/actors. I enjoyed without reading the book although some more character building might have been portrayed in the book, never the less a pict. is worth a thousand words says a lot for all the excellent cinematography here. The ending was a little dry IMO.Great period movie.

This is not a typical "Hollywood" movie. It has a quiet, slow, even pace in keeping with its subject matter. The sets and lighting are an exquisite reflection of what we see in Vermeer's painings. The acting is subtle. Much is conveyed by a glance or simple act, far more than through dialogue. Scarlett Johansson embodies the painting. Colin Firth gives an sensitive, understated performance. The lighting, photography and directing allow this story to shine.

The story line is minimal but the cinematography incredible. The scene where the painter instructs Griet on how to observe the different colors in a cloud is a lesson on how to observe phenomena in everyday life. Apart from that the daughter of Mrs. Vermeer is a picture of evil and Scarlett Johansen does an admirable job as the protagonist.

Colin Firth was exceptional, as was Scarlett Johannson. For anyone who loves visual art, this was a movie well worth seeing.

Better than the book by first time novelist Tracy Chevalier. The screen writer tighten it and added as much narrative tension as she could to a flat and literary plot. BEAUTIFULLY FILMED AND COSTUMED!!!!!!!! The entire movie is lit like a Vermeer painting and many of the scenes are paintings in motion. Quite accurate about Vermeer's home life and professional life. Scarlette Johanson does a superb job. Lack of plot and pace are what lept this from being an international hit like Shakespeare in Love
