I admit I avoided watching this movie until now because I couldn't invision Tom Cruise as a samurai. In my mind it was a little like imagining John Wayne as Zorro. But they made the connection very well indeed. Highly recommended! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It is filled with human spirit and filmed so beautifully. It is very violent all throughout the movie, so I would caution the viewer on that - but Tom Cruise is wonderful in this role and though it does go on a little longer than I feel was warranted - over all it's a grand film. Read More I am not a big fan of Cruise since he usually plays the cocky pretty-boy types and put off renting this for three years. His performance in this is very different from any other role he has played. At the start we see a typical Cruiser character but we see him evolve into someone completely different through the course of this film. Ken Watanabe is excellent as Katsumoto and he and Cruise have a definite on-screen connection that comes through beautifully. Definitely worth seeing and I will watch again! Read More If Tom Cruise had made this movie after it became fashionable to "bash" him, I think that he would have redeemed himself. The Last Samurai is what movie making is all about. It has everything: strong story, good acting, good photography etc, etc. Its themes of honor and redemption transcend any violence, none of which is gratuitous, and the manner in which Tom Cruise's character turns the hearts of his would-be enemies in the Samurai village is believable and genuinely touching. Highly recommended! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More It's a movie with an historical setting so of course it's going to be predictable. I'm as sick of seeing Tom Cruise as anyone but let's give him credit - he's a good actor. Political perspectives about the real Samurai aside, when watching the movie, I thought more about their way of life and their approach to war and how different it would be if modern vets and soldiers grew up with Bushido. I liked this movie a lot and the historial period it covered. I think George Lucas was equally fascinated by this era so much so that he created the Jedi & Star Wars universe based on it. The only negatives: not enough interesting extras in the DVD, lame kiss between 'Taka' and Tom, and why is Tom giving battlefield tips to Katsumoto, an experienced Daimyo who's battled against armies with firearms before?
