There is a lot of shootings, but more stylized than gore. I was concerned it was going to be relentlessly bleak and painful, but it wasnt. It portrays the spectrum of humanity, good and bad-- a balance-- not hopelessness. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Brazilian films tend to leave me depressed. This society, so vastly separated between the haves and have-nots and apparently unconcerned about inflicting death upon each other, is like a constant series of punches--one to the head, the other to the gut. MAN OF THE YEAR fits right into all this, but with some interesting variations. It begins like a dark, surreal philosophical comedy/tragedy; by the end it has become a weird, we-can-fix-this, feel-good, almost-Hollywood-like product (Warner Bros. appears to have been involved here) that discounts much of what we've just seen. Technically, the movie is excellent and the lead performance from Murilo Benecio ("Possible Loves," "Orfeu") is terrific: shocking contradictions yet essentially believable, if not particularly likeable. If a change of hair color can effect this kind of character change, who IS this man? And, by extension, who ARE these people? This one's worth seeing and pondering.

Read More "Arizona Daily Star" Review: Director Jose Henrique Fonseca erects another foreboding pillar in Brazil's burgeoning gangster film genre with his speedball of a crime flick. "The Man of the Year" shoves the viewer on a wild, backward and blindfolded luge through Rio's sinister streets, mixing equal parts of mob intrigue, love drama and comedy blacker than Brazilian coffee. Fonseca, who heaps energetic South American verve and voluminous social commentary on his Martin Scorsese influences, leaves the viewer woozy, punch-drunk and most importantly, buzzed and thirsty for more. Read More This film shows how little we know about the situation in other cultures and think the value of life is worthless only in the Mid East.It is the same all over the world and motivations are so absurdly obtuse for killing, and so removed from our reality in America, that this is an eye opener. Made on a shoe string, the reality factor is not lost.It is not entertaining as it is informative. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
