Directed by Clint Eastwood, the mysterious drama Mystic River is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane and adapted by screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Set in an Irish neighborhood in Boston, Jimmy, Sean, and Dave are three childhood friends who are reunited after a brutal murder takes place. Reformed convict Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn) and his devoted wife Annabeth (Laura Linney) find out that their teenage daughter Katie (Emmy Rossum) has been beaten and killed. Jimmy's old friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) is the homicide detective assigned to the case, along with partner Whitey Powers (Laurence Fishburne). Jimmy also gets his relatives, the Savage brothers (Adam Nelson and Robert Wahlberg), to conduct an investigation of their own. Jimmy and Sean both start to suspect their old pal, Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), who lives a quiet life with his wife Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) but harbors some disturbing secrets. Clint Eastwood won a Golden Coach for Mystic River at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Tim Robbins and Sean Penn's characters amke the story. Wht deep and dark feelings these two brought out in the story that made it incredible. It makes you realize how things are not always what they seem, no matter hwo good of friends you might be with someone. Each character carries his own pain and cannot clearly see the other's.

I loved the whole film knew that it was going to have a great ending

While it appears slow and a little confusing for awhile, gradually the pieces come together. Good character studies and the somewhat fractured puzzle of the story hold one's attention.

This is a good movie, I decided to watch it after reading several reviews. It kept my attention from start to finish, the beginning was pretty intense and made me question where the story was going. I would recommend anyone to watch at least once. The cast was well put together.

I always forget how much I don't like Sean Penn until I see him again in a movie even if he is a good actor. This was okay but nowhere on my favs list. It was actually pretty depressing and not the sort of movie I needed to see following a personal family tragedy. Would I recommend it? Maybe.

Excellent whodunit. Penn gives the performance of his life. Must see movie.

Quite a good movie, even though I normally avoid Sean Penn's flicks. Lots of top rate actors in this one. Unfortunately, a lot of the dialogue was extremely hard to understand. The mumbling required replay of many sections, even with a good sound system with the volume cranked up. Since this was a problem with multiple characters, I fault the audio production rather than the actors (or Boston accents).

I'm in a definite minority in that I was disappointed in this movie. After reading the reviews, and knowing that this film won two Oscars, I hoped for a lot more than what I got. The acting (Oscar-winning) was incredible, but the story itself moved so slowly, I lost interest. But I kept watching, thinking it would get better. It didn't. I suspect the problem (in my opinion) was the direction, which is sad...because I've loved Eastwood's other movies. It could also be that I plain didn't LIKE any of the characters, and thus didn't care what happened to them.
