Good Bye Lenin captures the story of a communist supporter who's dreams of social communism come to an end after the fall of the Berlin wall. Rather then tell his dying communist mother of the fall of communism, the son convinces his mother that the wall is still standing while on her deathbed. . .A must see! Read More A 5 star movie that portrays the collapse of the Berlin Wall in a different perspective. It tells us of how the communist and socialist people in East Germany deal with the end of a 40 years old communist country in so short a time that creates stress and tension in the two generations: the old ones who are incapable of change and the new ones who despise the communist country and seek to avoid it by any means. Note how the mother's friends react give us a full account of communists who are disillusioned with their own ideals. One strikingly difference here belongs to the mother, who seems at the end of the movie reveal to us the other aspect of her life: she tries to escape to West Berlin and she is fired from the school she is teaching. Ironically it is not the mother who needs to be hidden from reality but it is the son who needs to be reconciliated with the changing world. The sister represents the opposite of her brother, trying to forget and avoid the past. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Another great movie showing the separation of Germany when the wall went UP is 123 (One Two Three) with James Cagney, made in the early 60's. An hilarious counterpoint. 0 out of 0 people found this review helpful When a son faces a life or death situation when his die-hard Socialist mother comes out of an 8 month coma, triggered by her painfull witness to his arrest for having a part in a freedom demonstration in East Berlin, he opts for the former after doctors tell him his mothers' heart would not be able to withstand any excitement or shock without fatal consequences. So the son, with cooperation from a reluctant sister and outside aide, goes to great lengths to insure that his mothers' environment does not reveal any signs that the Cold War has thawed and the Berlin Wall has fallen. From resetting his bed-ridden mothers' room to as she left it complete with a hung picture of Vladimir Lenin, to imaginative bogus tv news reporting from a counterfeit newscast crew that is aired by means of a hidden video player set-up, the viewer watches with the wonderment of how long this charade could be pulled off and to what extent. This is subtitled, very entertaining, and well worth watching.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More A fair movie about young man who's mother (a staunch socialist) falls into a coma just before the wall falls in Germany in 89. After 8 months she awakes and because the doctors tell him that any shock can kill her, he goes to extreme lengths to keep that news from him. Not exactly a comedy - but it's amusing (if not far fetched) and has some touching moments. I just feel for the most part this film was over-rated, and so much more could have been said and done here than was. So for me, not a bad film, but it fell short of what it was capable of being.
