Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig, the writer and director of the 12th Dogme 95 film, 2000's critically acclaimed Italian for Beginners, presents this comedy drama starring Jamie Sives and Adrian Rawlins as brothers Wilbur and Harbour. When their mother died early in their lives, it became up to Harbour to keep tabs on Wilbur, the younger and chronically depressed of the two siblings. Now in their thirties, their father has passed away, leaving them to take over the family's used book store. It is there that they encounter Alice (Shirley Henderson), a hospital janitor who sells the books that patients leave behind, and her young, optimistic daughter, Mary (Lisa McKinlay). Together, the four form a bond that changes each of their lives, with Harbour falling in love with Alice and Mary's sunny demeanor giving the suicidal Wilbur a reason to live. The first English-language effort from Scherfig, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself was nominated for best film at Denmark's 2003 Bodil Awards. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

This is a story set in sunless Scotland in winter. The fact that one of main characters dies of pancreatic cancer doesn't make it any better for viewers demanding lively action, clear and easy plot and happy ending. It is a story of people behaving well told with remarkable subtlety and something of a sense of humor; may be difficult for mainstream American viewers.

While it is sometimes hard to understand what they are saying, the actors in this film are quite good and the plot is entertaining. At first we see an older brother who is constantly rescuing his younger brother from his suicide attempts. As the plot develops, the charaters evolve. Not only the main characters are good, but many of the minor characters also shine.

It's an okay story (if you stick with it, there are a few scenes that have value); but you won't miss anything if you pass up this movie. Wilbur's older brother turns out to be a match maker (of sorts); so he doesn't just take care of Wilbur, he takes care of many other people in this story. Things turn out okay for Wilbur in the end, but, like the constantly (it seems) rain-soaked setting, this film is actually melancholy.

You've got to be kidding. Camcorders can do better than this. How do you spell NetFlix???

Slow is the word, but if you can make it through the first half of the movie there is a kind of plot and movement to the movie that keeps you hanging in there. For what good reason? I can't answer that, but I can definitely say...this was NOT a comedy.

How did this get to DVD? If this was a film festival movie, everyone must have left the theatre. The acting was bad, the story was slow, drawn out and just lazy. The dialogue was worse that that, it was so bad it probably made the acting bad. I really dislike a movie with no plot and little supblots, and that was this. After the first 40 minutes there was no plot, and a crappy subplot. My wife left the room, and I couldn't take it. I generally never turn movies off, but this is one of the worst 20 movies I have ever seen.
