The few bits of character development thrown in did nothing to make me root for Umas character - or anyone she sliced and diced throughout this flick. The half star was because I didn't eject the movie in the first 15 minutes (although I did fast forward 1/4 of it). Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Ok, I get it. . . its supposed to be a tribute to a certain genre of movies, to an over the top anime style, etc, etc. But as plain old watchability this movie was fairly lame. It starts out well and the first half is fairly gripping and reminiscent in plot progress to that of Pulp fiction or Reservoir dogs but then the fight sequences were so long and so unbelievable (yes I know it was deliberate!) that I ended up skipping vast chunks of murder and mayhem. To me . . .it was a disappointment. I'm not even interested enough to see part two! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

This film is pure pleasure, for those who enjoy the jigsaw style that Tarantino is becoming famous for. It requires (and rates) your full attention, and so it won't register properly with all the distractions that typically accompany home viewing. With this film, a little viewer effort always delivers a toy surprise.
Tarantino puts massive effort into character and storyline development here, and for those who put in the effort, the payoff is superb.
An appreciation for the classic Kung Fu movies will help, but certainly isn't necessary. The visuals are stunning and original, as is Ms. Thurman, and the humor is intelligent and understated.
So: Unplug the phone, sit down, shut the (*&^( up and watch the film. Do nothing else. You'll love it. Then go rent Kill Bill Volume 2. The overall experience will be even more fun than Pulp Fiction. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Its based on a book-like theme, with chapters. Annoying chapter breaks flashed on the screen as if they couldnt find a creative way to seamlessly flow from one scene to the next. The film became convoluted and had a jerky feel to it. One chapter was almost entirely Japanese anime, and while it was well drawn, it didnt add anything to forward the story. This movie was also gory, but comically so. When someone's arm gets chopped off, the blood literally squirted out like a fountain and sprays everyone as if connected to a pressurized water hose. This happens every time someone loses a head or other appendage. While the fighting sequences were well written and acted, the filming was not. The wire work was poorly constructed in places, and the camera work was unstable and erratic (making it hard to follow). Also, during the fighting the camera faded to black and white (making it even more difficult to follow).

The film was not meant to be taken seriously. Of course the fight scenes were rediculous, but the film is entertainment. Lots of clever moments, leading up to an explosive ending. I was very anxious to see Volume II, which finally put it all in perspective for me. I would actually call it a love story, having seen both volumes. A very bizarre love story. He adds a little from the movies he enjoyed watching probably back in his days as a video store clerk. This movie has a ton of blood and violence but in a spiced up comedic way. Lots of action that keeps you anticipating the second half. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
