I can't get enough westerns..and this is one of my favorites. I bought this right away after viewing. I know it's not your classic 'shoot-em-up' but it's share. Frankly watching Duval play what's become a signature role for him is worth the viewing period. Frankly if you get bored with this stick with Young Guns and Tombstone(1993) (and yes..I like those too)

Decided to review this after I just finished watching the ending again. Pundits having been saying the Western is dead for years. They are wrong, as Open Range demonstrates. Granted, modern sensibilities have made filming an effective Western more difficult, but if you have a good story, good acting, and good direction, you are in good shape. Open Range has all of these. What is truly remarkable is that this movie focuses on character more than plot and action (though the ending provides plenty of that), and yet manages to remain extremely compelling. Robert Ducall, as always, is in a class by himself, and Kevin Costner and Annette Benning turn in star performances as well. Overall, a fantastic film to watch.

A couple of people told me this was a great movie, and I read the reviews (which are mixed), so I decided to give another over-hyped Costner movie a try. Aargh!!! Long, boring, predictable, and many times cheesy. Duvall and Bening were ok, but Costner is an over-hyped actor. Having watched a lot of Westerns, this one wasn't very good at all. And it really could have lasted only 30 minutes to get the whole story in. The rest was filler. Go ahead and try it, but have a crossword to do or something.

Excellent western with good historical accuracy. Duvall and Costner are a great fit.

Though there are some fine performances in several scenes, as westerns go this had far too many lulls between scenes. The Costner/Duvall team was a nice one though. Nice to see Michael Jeter in this in a role a little diferent for him and? A great shoot-out towards the end that earns it's stars here.

If you love or hate it...movie too long or whatever...the shootout in the end is one of the best of any western movie period. Turn the volume up and just sit back...you get a sense and sound of a real western shootout. And the power behind those guns and the way those guys had horrible aim...man...I own this thing and fast forward to the end just to watch them shoot it out.

Good movie as far as westerns go. Pro: The most realistic deadly sounding gunfire I have ever heard. Con: This movie could not have been any less innovative in its story....This has been done 10,000 times if it has been done once....troubled ex bad tough guy that is really good inside; mysteriously single pretty woman in a frontier town that is a (choose one: nurse, school teacher, shop keeper); mean super rich (choose one: ranch owner, banker, railroad man, land speculator) that owns every one and everything in town including the corrupt sheriff; and last but not least the honest meek town menfolk that finally get some balls and rise up at the end to help our outnumbered hero defeat the bad guy and free their lovely little town. It IS a good western but would have been nice to have an original idea.
